The Forks in Life

Forks are everywhere what we choose is up to us.

By Erika WoodPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

Left or right, black or white, yes or no, a constant twisting, turning of decision making. This life of ever evolving forks is always a page turner and always going to have that mysterious fork that comes out of nowhere. Do we take the dark and twisty or do we take the bright and shiny? Do we always take the one our friends want us to take since that is the way we all must go, or do we take the one less taken for the solitude of the trip? The fork we take sometimes by ourselves can be lonely The fork that we are instinctively led to can be the plot twist that is needed for us to be our best selves.

The dark and twisty is not always the fork that is bad. We can see the trail is steep and dark the way only lighted by the light of our cellphones. Those twisting turning ever changing forks can be the ones that change us to our core that help us grow and help us be ready for the next fork that just might be the one we think is the easiest. In the dark, we must rely on the light that is small and in constant need of nourishment to light our way. We take a step and find that we are on squishy ground so we take a step back. Do we keep taking steps back to the place we know best or do we push forward finding rocks and firm terra firma to guide our way.

The bright and shiny is the easiest the safest we think. It’s the one that has a never-ending supply of bright welcoming light enticing us. This path is the one that should be the one we always take its safe and has cellphone charging areas as well as free WIFI. This path is not always the best to take it is to safe, to rewarding, to easy. The constant acceptance of this path seems to make us complacent in our choices of other forks and we tend to stay right where we are at. This choice is lighted by the bright, shiny, safe, forks in our life. This fork can also be the fork that is needed when the buffeting of life that left us bruised and disillusioned about all the forks in our lives. It is warm, safe, and bright enough to read our map for the guidance that is needed.

Following the crowd of people at Disney World can lead us to a long wait for the shortest ride, but that wait can be well worth it in the end. Taking that fork with the crowd can be the easiest fork we take; the decision is made as we follow the crowd and quickly jump to that side of the road and zoom down the path. It is easy and the group can buffer each of its members from the bumps that come their way, they can guide and entertain along the way. This fork can also lead to our being lost not knowing who we truly are to the core and the decisions we make are based on what the crowd wants not what your heart is telling you.

The fork with only our thoughts for company can be the loneliest and the hardest to turn to. The solitude holds off the swirls of life going past and gives us a respite from the ever-increasing speed of forks coming our way. The quiet helps us heal from the hard decisions and gives us a chance to think. This fork can also be the one that will lead us to destruction with nothing but the whispers of doubt and self-loathing to listen to. The ruminating of our thoughts with the replaying of doubts and frustrations of forks we traveled wrong.

The forks that are lonely but have a guiding hand that seem to lead us in the direction we need to take are the ones we feel from within. This fork seems to be the one that is always the right one to take the one that heals, loves, excepts, and knows what is needed. It is a guiding light even in darkness. These forks, for those who wish to honestly see them, are at every fork in our lives only those who honestly ask will know them. They are always there and can only be seen and felt from within; all that is needed is that we look within and ask to find the true path.
