The Day That Changed Everything

A Small Act of Kindness That Altered the Course of a Life

By Md Johirul IslamPublished 9 months ago 4 min read

It was a gloomy Wednesday afternoon. The clouds gathered above as if they carried the same burden that weighed on Hasan's chest. Life had been unkind lately. He had just lost his part-time job at the printing shop, his tuition students had decreased, and his family in the village depended heavily on him. Dhaka felt colder, not because of the weather, but because of the loneliness that grew deeper every day.

Hasan had never felt so lost. He stood in the middle of Farmgate, one of the busiest areas in Dhaka, watching the crowd rush past him. Their hurried steps, their constant purpose, it all felt so distant. It was as if everyone had somewhere to go, and Hasan was just standing still in the middle of it all, with nowhere to be.

With a sigh, he sat on a broken bench near the sidewalk, staring at the busy road ahead. His mind wandered to the stack of resumes in his bag — resumes he had handed out to every company he could think of, with no reply. He felt invisible in a city full of people.

Suddenly, something unusual caught his eye. An elderly man, blind, with a white cane, was trying to cross the street. Cars zoomed past, some slowing down but none stopping. People glanced but hurried on, avoiding eye contact. Nobody stopped to help.

For a moment, Hasan hesitated. But then, instinct took over. He got up and quickly walked toward the old man. Gently, he took his hand and guided him to the other side of the road, keeping him safe from the speeding traffic. The man was frail, but his grip was firm.

“Thank you, beta,” the elderly man said, his voice warm with gratitude. “You didn’t ignore me like the others.”

Hasan felt a wave of humility wash over him. “It’s nothing, uncle,” he replied quietly.

The man smiled. “Not everyone would do what you just did. People today… they don’t stop. I’m grateful.”

They stood there for a moment, the old man resting his hand on his cane, and Hasan unsure what to say next. The man looked up and asked, “What do you do?”

Hasan paused, unsure whether to reveal how lost he truly felt. “I… I’m looking for work,” he admitted.

The old man nodded knowingly. “You know, I run a small charity for youth development. You should come visit me sometime. We might have something for you.”

At first, Hasan didn’t think much of it. It was probably just a polite offer, like so many others people had given him. But a strange feeling tugged at him. Maybe it was the way the man had looked at him, or maybe it was just the kindness in his words. Regardless, two days later, Hasan decided to take a chance. He visited the address the man had given him.

The building was small but cozy, and the people inside were welcoming. The elderly man introduced him to his team, and within a week, Hasan had started working as a coordinator for the organization. He was responsible for managing workshops for underprivileged children, a job that gave him purpose and the chance to make a difference.

The work wasn’t easy, but it gave him the opportunity to learn new skills, from event organization to communication. It wasn’t the kind of job he had envisioned for himself, but it was something meaningful. Over time, he grew more confident. His interactions with the children inspired him to pursue his dreams further.

One afternoon, as Hasan was going through some paperwork, the old man walked into the room with a brown envelope in hand. He handed it to Hasan with a proud smile. Inside the envelope was a scholarship application for a university in Malaysia.

“I believe in you, Hasan,” the old man said. “You’ve shown that you have the heart to help others. Now, it’s time to help yourself.”

Hasan could hardly believe his eyes. A scholarship? For Social Development? It seemed too good to be true. But as he read through the details, he realized this was the opportunity he had been waiting for. This was his chance to finally change his life.

Months later, Hasan stood at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, backpack slung over his shoulder. His heart was heavy but full of hope. He was about to board a flight to Malaysia, where he would study Social Development, a field he had always been passionate about.

He had come so far from that gloomy day when he felt like giving up. All because of a single act of kindness, one that had opened a door he never thought would exist. It wasn’t the job, the scholarship, or even the city that had changed him. It was the realization that sometimes, the most unexpected moments in life lead to the greatest changes.

Years later, Hasan returned to Dhaka with a degree and a mission. He had founded his own NGO, focusing on youth education and empowerment. And every time he crossed the same road near Farmgate, he remembered that elderly man. The man with the white cane who had seen something in him that no one else had.
