Stop Complaining About Getting Older
It's time to accept that it's a privilege
I think a lot of people when they're young struggle with the thought of getting older and having it sink in that their lives might change. Maybe there's a fear of responsibility involved, or perhaps they simply are worried that turning into an adult means becoming boring. Hopefully, as we grow up, we realise that we shouldn't dread getting older, but acknowledge how lucky we are that we get to see another year.
Not to sound depressing, but I'm sure we've all seen from personal experiences that unfortunately not everyone is lucky enough to grow old. Some people are born with very short lifespans predicted for them, and other people die from unexpected illnesses or accidents, way before their time. Seeing this as I've grown older has made me realise how unfair it is for us to complain about our birthdays approaching, be annoyed that we now have to be placed in a different age bracket or dread reaching a certain age.
We need to stop being afraid of the natural thing that getting older is, and start appreciating all the years we are given to exist on this planet, and be grateful for our time here. If you're scared that turning a year older gives you one year less to live, remember that you did live this one year, it didn't just disappear. Make sure to make the most of your time and your life, and you won't have to feel like you're missing out on living.
Something else that is encouraging is that our society has developed to a place where it's more acceptable to be your own kind of adult, and that being an adult doesn't mean you must fit into one specific box. It's now cool for adults to like video games, cartoons, anime and a lot of other things that previously were thought of as stuff for only the younger generations. Turning a year older doesn't automatically mean you'll lose yourself or that your personality will change. Actually, a lot of cool things come with getting older. You'll get the chance to drive a car, live on your own, do all kinds of different work and even buy a house. Some things of being an adult are scary at first, but a lot of things in life can be intimidating before you learn how to do them.
While I'm the same person as I was ten years ago, I'm the more mature and responsible version of her, and I definitely prefer who I am today over who I was then. I now know that more years added to my life means more experience and stories to share with people. I'm constantly learning new things and bettering myself, and this wouldn't be possible without the passing of time. If time stood still, we would have no character development, nothing going on in our lives, and life would, in fact, be boring. Time actually moving is what makes life not boring, but fun and exciting, and full of opportunities. If you stayed a child, you wouldn't have many opportunities at all.
Stop being scared of something that isn't gonna hurt you, but is actually gonna enrich your life. Time is your friend if you allow it to be. Many people are denied the chance to grow older, so let's make the most of our lives, for them and for ourselves. Be the kind of grownup that you want to be, there are no rules that you can't watch Disney movies or wear Spongebob socks. Enjoy your life, and stop wasting energy wanting it to slow down. It's happening right now, don't miss out on it.
