Sapphire Coffee: Brewing Hope, Empowering Communities, and Transforming Lives

Business Spotlight

By Tammy ReesePublished about a year ago 3 min read

Sapphire Coffee isn't just about brewing exceptional coffee; it's a movement for change, led by founder Debbie Cross. Hailing from Trinidad and Tobago and now based in New York City, Debbie has turned her passion for philanthropy into a thriving coffee brand with a mission. Every purchase of Sapphire Coffee directly supports disaster relief efforts, community outreach, and initiatives that empower women and children. Recently honored with The President's Lifetime Achievement Award for her work with Operation Impact, Debbie is redefining what it means to blend business with purpose. At Sapphire Coffee, every sip contributes to a brighter future.

Tell us about Sapphire Coffee and what inspired you to create it.

Debbie Cross: Sapphire Coffee is more than just a coffee brand - it's a movement rooted in giving back. The idea came to me when I realized how something as simple as a cup of coffee could bring people together and inspire change. I wanted to create a brand that not only delivers amazing coffee but also serves as a tool to support those in need. Our mission is simple: 100% of our proceeds go toward helping families, whether through disaster relief, holiday drives, or community outreach.

What makes Sapphire Coffee stand out from other coffee brands?

Debbie Cross: Our mission to give back is at the heart of everything we do. Every single purchase of Sapphire Coffee directly supports someone in need. We've been able to provide food and supplies to families impacted by natural disasters and organize holiday drives that bring joy to underserved communities. It's coffee with a cause, and that's what sets us apart.

You've done incredible work in disaster relief. Can you share a recent example?

Debbie Cross: Absolutely. Recently, we were able to assist families in Asheville, NC, who were impacted by Hurricane Helene. We provided essential supplies to help them get back on their feet. Moments like these remind me why I started Sapphire Coffee - to be there for communities when they need it most.

As a military veteran, how has your service shaped your journey as a business owner?

Debbie Cross: Serving in the military taught me resilience, leadership, and the importance of serving others. Those values are deeply embedded in Sapphire Coffee. While I'm no longer in uniform, I feel like I'm still serving by giving back to communities through my brand. It's a different kind of service, but just as fulfilling.

What challenges have you faced as a woman entrepreneur, and how have you overcome them?

Debbie Cross: Being a woman in business definitely comes with its challenges, especially when trying to break into industries that are traditionally male-dominated. I've faced moments of doubt, but I've learned to push forward by staying true to my mission and surrounding myself with supportive people. I also remind myself that my work is bigger than me - it's about the communities we serve.

How does Sapphire Coffee support women and other entrepreneurs?

Debbie Cross: I'm passionate about inspiring others to pursue their dreams. Through Sapphire Coffee, I hope to show that you can create a business with purpose while driving real impact. I also love connecting with other women entrepreneurs and sharing resources or advice to help them thrive. Empowered women empower others, and I truly believe in that.

What advice would you give to other women looking to start their own businesses?

Debbie Cross: Start with your why. When you have a purpose that drives you, it becomes easier to navigate the challenges. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help. Building a network of supportive people can make all the difference. Most importantly, believe in yourself and the impact your business can make.

What's next for Sapphire Coffee?

Debbie Cross: We're constantly looking for new ways to expand our impact. This holiday season, we're focusing on more community drives and partnering with organizations to reach even more families in need. I'm also working on growing our product line while staying true to our mission of giving back.

How can people support Sapphire Coffee and its mission?

Debbie Cross: Supporting Sapphire Coffee is as easy as enjoying your favorite cup of coffee. Every purchase helps someone in need, so it's a win-win! You can also follow us on social media to stay updated on our initiatives and share our mission with others. Together, we can make a difference, one cup at a time.

Lastly, what does being a woman entrepreneur mean to you?

Debbie Cross: It means being a trailblazer, a leader, and a source of inspiration for others. It's about using your platform to create positive change and showing others that they can do the same. Being a woman entrepreneur isn't just about running a business - it's about leaving a legacy.
