Responsibility Matters
Insight Into Personal Responsibility

Lately, I find myself thinking a lot about personal responsibility. I find that too often, when people succeed, they want to claim all the glory, but when they fail, they blame other people or factors beyond their control. Sometimes we are just lucky or unlucky, but I also think that we often underestimate just how much we can control our destiny if we really put our minds to it.
I know that each one of us are born under different circumstances and with different means at our disposal, but some of the most successful people I know also come from humble beginnings. The one thing they have in common is that they are incredibly good at recognizing what is within their control and then doing their best to control it.
People who take complete responsibility for their lives experience joy and control of circumstances. They are able to make choices because they understand that they are responsible for their choices. Taking ownership and responsibility for your actions is an important part of healthy relationships. Doing so is an empowering reminder that you have control over the role you play in your relationship. Taking responsibility creates trust and dependability.

1. Start small
Taking responsibility doesn’t mean you are going to get your dream job in a matter of weeks. But it does mean taking a decision to increase the things in your life that you are personally responsible for. Look at your current circumstances and make a list of the three things that you would most like to change. Then start thinking about what is within your control and what you can do to work towards a better future.
2. Understand that it is hard
When you first start to take responsibility, you start to realize that there are many things that you can control that you used to blame on other people or your circumstances. This is often not a very comfortable feeling, but these are just the birth pains towards a new, better you. Taking responsibility sometimes mean working harder than you ever did before, but the rewards far outweigh any of the negatives.
3. Keep getting better
Once you start to control more things in your life, you start to realize that there are other things you can control too. The awesome thing about personal responsibility is that it is infinite. You’ll find yourself just getting better and better, no matter how small you started.
4. Stand strong
The biggest enemy of personal responsibility is often temptation. For instance, you may decide to study a new course to help you get the career you always wanted, which means you now have to study at night. If you have a friend who is a distraction and who wants to come over all the time, you would have to be firm with her and tell her that she cannot come around as often as usual.
5. Have fun
Personal responsibility is serious business and often takes hard work, but don’t ever forget to have fun along the way. The whole point is working towards a better future and what point is there to that if it is not also filled with joy? Part of responsibility is good time management and if you do that well, there will be plenty of time in your life to do the fun stuff without distracting from your goals.
