Ponagar Tower

Discover the History of Ponagar Tower Nha Trang

Ponagar Tower was built between the 7th and 13th centuries, during the golden age of Hinduism and the Champa Kingdom. Also known as Yang Po Inu Nagar or Yang Po Ana Gar, the tower is dedicated to the goddess Po Ina Nagar, who is believed to be the deity that created the earth, trees, and rice. She also protects people from natural disasters and brings bountiful harvests and peaceful lives.

To this day, Ponagar Tower remains a significant spiritual site for the Cham people. With its unique architecture and many unsolved mysteries, Ponagar Tower was recognized as a national monument in 1979 and has become a popular tourist destination for visitors. Where is Ponagar Tower located?

When you visit Nha Trang, you can easily stop by Ponagar Tower as it is only about 2 kilometers from the city center. This heritage site is situated on a small hill beside the Cai River and attracts many visitors, especially during the early-year festival season.

What makes Ponagar Tower worth visiting?

The Ponagar temple complex is divided into three main areas that visitors can explore:

The Gate Tower Area:

This is where the large entrance gates used to stand. However, over time, the gate towers have deteriorated. Currently, only the stone steps, column bases, and the stone stairs leading to the next level remain.

The Mandapa area is where the Cham people prepared their offerings. It features ten large columns arranged in two rows, each standing 3 meters high and 1 meter wide. Surrounding these are twelve smaller columns, each 1 meter tall and set on bases. After exploring this area, visitors can use the staircase to reach the third level.

In the temple complex, there are several towers: the Central Tower, the Southeast Tower next to it, and the South Tower, which is the smallest and located beside the Southeast Tower. These three towers are aligned in a straight line. Additionally, there is the Northwest Tower, but it is not in line with the other three.

Admire Ancient Cham Architecture

Ponagar Tower is one of the most prominent architectural masterpieces of the ancient Cham people. Visitors can clearly see that even centuries ago, the Cham people had advanced construction techniques, as evidenced by the unique and intricate design details in the tower. Thanks to their secret building methods, Ponagar Tower has remained standing to this day, defying the test of time. This truly remains an unsolved mystery. Ponagar Tower not only holds cultural value but also contributes significant architectural heritage to humanity.

Discover Unique Cultural Festivals

In addition to exploring Ponagar Tower, visitors can immerse themselves in vibrant cultural festivals held at the site. The Ponagar Tower Festival, celebrated annually from the 20th to the 23rd of the third lunar month, is an occasion to express gratitude to the goddess Ponagar, who brought prosperity to the Cham people. During the festival, visitors can partake in solemn traditional rituals and enjoy exciting activities such as offering incense to the Mother Goddess, lion dances, releasing lanterns, Cham dances, and ceremonial singing. Isn’t that fascinating?
