Men Who Inspire

By Tammy ReesePublished 5 months ago Updated 5 months ago 3 min read

A community builder, spiritual leader, and author of Master The Bait, Pastor Joseph S. Bowman IV isn't just writing books, he's writing legacy. What began as deeply personal letters to his sons while his own father lay on his deathbed, evolved into a transformative body of work that speaks to the hearts of men struggling to reconcile faith, manhood, trauma, and identity. But his voice doesn't stop at the pulpit or the page. In the city of Federal Way, Washington, Bowman is a force for unity, having mobilized nearly 50 nonprofits to fill systemic gaps and offer real hope to families in need.

Through raw storytelling, fearless community engagement, and an commitment to authenticity, Pastor Bowman is helping a generation of men and communities to heal, grow, and redefine strength.

What inspired you to become an author, and how has your personal journey influenced your writing?

Authoring books is an element of legacy. My children's - children, will be able to read these writings from my heart and soul.

What motivated you to write "Master The Bait," and what key messages do you hope readers will take away from it?

A righteous indignation as the vast majority of Christian material for men is wrapped around "Iron sharpening Iron", "Porn Addiction" or "Husbands Love Your Wives as Christ Loved The Church". While all of these are noble and scripturally based; we also need to speak to, as I was being sharpened, some places in my soul were still left dull. As for porn, let's talk about the cousin who stayed over one weekend, brought his collection of magazines and videos, which left me craving a fanaticized idea of what it means to engage with a woman as a vessel of honor rather than an object. As a husband, I absolutely desire to give my wife my all, just like Jesus gave his life - but my aspiration to be a model husband, loving father, valiant leader, often leaves me exhausted - and guess what y'all - I ain't JESUS! Bad grammar on purpose.

"Master The Bait", was penned to my sons, while my father was on his deathbed. These are conversations I wish I could have had with my dad and his dad to better understand myself and others.

How do your books address real-life challenges faced by individuals and families, and why is it important for you to tackle these topics?

Writers must be transparent and share from a lived experience. Science, data, studies, and research are great. Nonetheless, I don't think those foundations remedy the same as sound wisdom, knowledge and experience.

How did you bring together nearly 50 nonprofits to deepen support for Federal Way residents, and what challenges did you face in this role?

I was blessed to succeed a great community leader Greg Vickers. The city had garnished an initiative to augment human services in our community, I grabbed an oar and began paddling to advance the cause.

The deepest challenges we faced were taken the "guesswork" out of our citizens being well informed to obtain services. Additionally, I also found dissonance between the nonprofits coming together to speak about resourcing the community and actually mobilizing efforts to extend a hand of hope.

As an author and community leader, how do you see your influence shaping the conversations around community support and advocacy?

I believe I'm deemed a "credible messenger", based on my direct experience with community, civic leaders, and saturation of presence. My voice is respected as an innovator, collaborator and facilitator. I only use my voice to elevate and build, not tear down.

How do you believe writing can serve as a tool for social change, particularly in the context of community issues?

Again, if each of us leans into another's experience, we can learn from each other. It's when we disqualify someone else's narrative, that we become siloed. While still holding a banner of unity, yet our motives and intentions only land in the areas of our interest and initiatives, failing to consider the aggregate.

Are there any future writing projects or initiatives you are currently working on that you can share with us?

Yes, I desire to earn a doctoral degree. I'm eager to deep-dive into researching (dissertation) "The Church In Black & White - A Racial Disposition In The Radical World of Religion"! More to come…

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write about personal experiences or community issues?

Just Do It! Write until your heart pulsates. Write with conviction. Write like a bestselling author. Read everything worth reading. Write some more!

What legacy do you hope to leave through your books and community work, and how do you envision that impacting future generations?

The power of modernizing age-old wisdom is my greatest hope. Solomon was deemed the wisest and richest man in scripture. Can you imagine many generations following the path yet charting new trails alongside the footpaths that have been trailed. Endless possibilities!
