Open Letter for Those Who Want to Stop Writing in the Medium
Giving up is not the way to go
Imagine a big problem involving criminal investigation, with many competent courts behind you. Or a disease that needs to be treated and you need at least about $15,000 to complete the amount and nobody wants to help you, not even the bank wants to make a loan to you.
You already have 90.2% of the amount to pay the fine or the medical expense otherwise your closest relative is about to lose his life. With the pressures and without focus, you don’t know what else to do because you are weeks fighting against it. At the very beginning of the month, nobody has a salary, so in that affliction, suddenly you receive the message from Stripe in your e-mail saying: check your last payment, you received a payment of 28 thousand dollars from the Medium partner program.
Pause a little… surprises that only happen in Medium. What is this?
You’re hallucinating and I don’t understand how this is possible. It’s unbelievable because it’s at a time totally out of control. As a writer at Medium, you go into your Medium account, and by coincidence, while you were spending difficult weeks facing judicial or hospital problems, your stories were viralizing at Medium and you were one of the authors who made the most money in a single month.
What you never thought would save your problems, in the blink of an eye, changed everything around you and the debt can finally be paid. You are then absolved of the fine, you’re next of kin will be treated and cured of the illness, and the other change left over to keep expenses minimal after the event.
Your reaction will be this
I never think about stopping writing in Medium. Medium is my alternative when everything is being difficult. No matter how much I have a job in a state company or in a private company with a good patrimonial reputation, a salary in conditions, problems exist and it’s never enough to have an extra in my pocket because, in the world we live today, the extras serve to save us from unforeseen problems.
What am I getting at with all this talk?
It doesn’t matter your reason or disappointment that is making you think about leaving the Medium or you who already left and by research came across this story. Medium is not that bad and if he doesn’t make sense to you. Just use it as an alternative to increasing another penny in your bank account.
Actually, my opinion is not because of the money earned through the partner program, but because Medium is the platinum that I knew and in a year proved to be the platform that most makes writers to WRITERS. Inside Medium you build an incredible and credible audience, a platform where you don’t have robots to generate fake traffic and still frustrate your work with decentralized ads.
Through Medium many important writers were discovered and today write in newspapers and platforms of high quality and reputation in the market of journalism and blogging. Through Medium many have gained jobs, credibility, and reputation elsewhere.
Note.
Everyone is free to think and act, no one is required to stay in a certain place. I just think that some will regret it. One of the great writers who stopped writing in the Medium after reaching an incredible audience elsewhere is Zat Rana, who built an audience from the Medium and when he got a faithful audience he left the Medium. Everyone has his reason but I think it’s never too much to be writing in more than 3 places.
At this moment, for example, Medium, News Break, and Vocal, are platforms that writers should not be without an active portfolio in them. They are platforms of excellence that have built a perfect home for modern writers linked to writing quality.
These three platforms I consider as platforms for anyone who is living a moment of freedom and wants to express their skills through writing, in a very excellent way.
I can’t wait to retire and continue writing on these platforms, as a way to unwind and take my thinking to the whole world in a simple and innovative way.
