National Compliment Your Mirror Day

A Day to Motivate Change

By Cindy AvePublished 5 years ago Updated 4 years ago 3 min read

Now more than ever with every screen driving an image pushed world, let's take a moment to think about complimenting genuinely a very important person in our lives - ourselves!

This day should motivate us to look into the mirror (or selfie lens) and recognize that we are all truly different, and that's OK. We are exceptional, inside and out.

“When I was around 18, I looked in the mirror and said, ‘You’re either going to love yourself or hate yourself.’ And I decided to love myself. That changed a lot of things.” – Queen Latifah

It is important to know that Compliment Your Mirror Day isn’t just about your physical outer beauty, but also all of your inner strengths and inner beauties.

That mirror on the wall has been around for a very long time. But, too many times, self-esteem is pushed aside as an issue. First, let’s do a check in with yourself to see if you have a health self-esteem? Do you?

• Avoid dwelling on past (often negative) experiences

• Believe you are equal to everyone else, no better or worse

• Express your needs easily

• Feel confident

• Have an overall positive outlook on life

• Say no when you want to (have healthy way of expressing boundaries)

• See your overall strengths and weaknesses and accept them

Perhaps, after passing the mirror today, you can start a journal. It is a great reflect tool to write down your thoughts and feelings. This could be regardless of them being positive or negative. It can be a good way to offload them and then look back on them to realize how strong of a person you really are.

You could also spend the day just doing things that YOU want to. To often than not, we are too busy pleasing others, and often neglect wonderful selves. Why not have a pamper day? Just doing something you have put off does wonders for your heart, health, and well-being.

How we perceive ourselves directly changes how treat others. If this is a difficult to do, let’s try to foster a positive self-image. Practice offering a compliment or two to yourself in the mirror and the reflection you see.

• Become more aware of negative thoughts so that you can first identify how they are impacting your self-worth.

• Challenge negative thinking patterns. When you find yourself engaging in negative thinking, try countering them a more realistic and/or positive ones.

• Use positive self-talk. Today, practice giving yourself a compliment

• Practice compassion – First, forgive yourself for your past mistakes

Treat yourself like the KING or QUEEN that your truly are today. Hopefully, this one day will lead to another where you truly tell yourself how amazing you are and as a result spill into other people’s lives for the better.

I close with a poem for reflection on how wonderful being different is for the world:

Mirror, Mirror on the wall,

You don’t look like yourself at all.

With the phone lens covering everyone’s face,

Those selfies are taking up a lot of space.

What do you see staring back into the mirror?

What we see looking back is less clear.

The looking glass is more and more clouded,

The need to keep followers keeps things crowded.

What looks back in the mirror should be a love,

But instead, we throw up the boxing glove.

Who are really is looking back at you?

Why do you need to constantly fuel the need to outdo?

What we fail to see is the world is a rainbow.

Variety and beautiful colors could be working toe to toe.

Today let’s really look into the mirror,

And ask why can’t we draw everyone closer?
