My Peace

Art is Art

By John WrightPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Over the years I have experimented in many activities to escape the brute reality of everyday life. What I have come to find is that anything that helps ease your mind and bring you back to a comfortable mental and physical stand point is great. Meditation was a very interesting and for a while it was something I would look forward to doing. Then it became harder and harder for me to gain the mental stimulation from meditation I had in the beginning. Needless to say meditation just is not something I do frequently anymore. I applaud the people who do. Next came the guitar. I may be wrong but I feel as if everyone at some point in their life sees someone else play a musical instrument and thinks "man it sure would be cool if I could do that". That thought sure crossed my mind. I found a cheap guitar off of Amazon and thought "eh lets give it a shot". Through countless hours on youtube learning chords and strumming patterns and moving in to songs that I like, I became bored with it. Now my amateur skill has turned into a party trick and not the mental get away I was searching for.

There are many other activities I have tried but we will leave those alone. About five to six months ago, I was visiting an old friend down in Orlando. It was raining and just not very good weather to anything outside. As we sit around all day catching up, watching movies, etc. I notice he had kind of a mess on one side of his kitchen table. I walk over and see a few canvases and some paint and brushes and basically everything you need to paint with. My friend says "you can do one if want to, I'll teach you". To me acrylic pour painting was new I had never heard of it nor had I ever seen a painting like the ones he had done. After that I was hooked. I call my girlfriend as I'm driving back to our house the next day and the excitement is pouring the phone. Of course I stop by a Michael's before I get home and spend more money in there than I should have. I get home and set up my little station like my friend had. I begin my mind has just transformed into a generator of color ideas and different pouring techniques. I made my first painting all by myself and I was full of happiness and ease of mind. When I looked over to check the time on my phone I noticed that 2 hours had passed and I was late for dinner and I was covered in paint.

Now in the present, I probably do about two or three pours a week depending. Doing these acrylic pours does not seem forced nor does it feel like I am doing it for anyone else. It is solely for me. Each piece is unique and holds it's own individual value. Something I had never heard of has turned into something I love to do and the gratification it gives me is unrivaled. Not only did this activity speak to me, I have friends that do it and we share our experiences and our paintings. Unlike guitar and meditating this is something I foresee myself doing for a long time and who knows I might can sell a few if not I like the paintings either way. If you do not know about acrylic pour painting I encourage you to look it up and just see about it.
