Just 30 minutes of exercise every morning can be as effective as medicine in improving blood circulation for the rest of the day.

One study found that a short walk every morning has long-term effects , plus additional benefits from continuing gentle movement throughout the day.

The experiment involved 35 women and 32 men between the ages of 55 and 80. These followed 3 different daily plans, in a random order, with at least 6 days between each.

The first routine consisted of sitting continuously for 8 hours , while the second consisted of one hour in a chair before 30 minutes of walking on a treadmill at an intermediate intensity, followed by 6.5 hours of rest.

The last plan is similar to the second, but it interrupted the final rest every half hour to go for a brisk walk.

The study was conducted in a laboratory to standardize the results , and both men and women ate the same thing during the day and the day before.

Michael Wheeler and his colleagues at the University of Western Australia  found that blood pressure was lower in participants who exercised  compared to those who remained at rest.

The effect was especially noticeable on systolic pressure, which measures the flow in blood vessels when the heart beats . This gives better indications of heart problems than its diastolic counterpart, which measures the force exerted by the arteries when the heart rests.

Women benefited more than men in the routine where they had to walk 3 minutes every half hour.

The team doesn't know why there is a gender difference, but they think it may be due to variations in adrenaline responses to exercise, in addition to the fact that the women in the study were post-menopausal and, therefore, with an increased chance of contracting cardiovascular disease.

"For both men and women, the magnitude of the reduction in average systolic pressure after exercise and adequate rest is close to what would be expected from any antihypertensive medication ," Wheeler told  The New Scientist . .

The study provides a large body of evidence to show that physical activity can help reduce high blood pressure, in addition to reducing the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease .
