The Early Struggle
When I began leading teams, it felt like steering blindfolded in a storm. Decisions felt like dart throws. One moment, we were making progress, and the next, we were back at square one, unsure of where things were going. The team was confused, and I was too. We were moving, but it didn’t feel like we were getting anywhere.
The pressure to be perfect kept me on edge. I wanted to lead well but had no clear blueprint to follow. It was like trying to solve a puzzle with half the pieces missing.
Then, one day, something clicked. I realized that the chaos wasn’t just affecting me—it was affecting the whole team. That’s when I decided I needed a change.
Here’s what helped me turn the tide, step by step.
1. Clarity in Communication
A lack of clarity in communication was one of the first obstacles I had to face. I remember a specific meeting where my team looked more confused after we’d finished than before we’d started. We were discussing goals, strategies, and priorities, but no one seemed to be on the same page. The meeting should’ve been a launchpad for clarity but instead left everyone more uncertain.
I had been speaking in riddles. I assumed everyone knew what I meant and was familiar with the jargon I used. But I learned quickly that clear, concise communication isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s the foundation of effective leadership.

- Use clear directives: Be specific. Ambiguous instructions lead to confusion and inefficiency.
- End every meeting with recaps: Before wrapping up, summarize key points, action items, and next steps. This ensures everyone leaves with a clear understanding of what’s expected.
By focusing on clarity, I began to see my team’s confidence grow. When they knew exactly what was expected and what the goal was, it became easier for them to take initiative and stay on track.
2. Structured Goal Setting
Without direction, even the best teams flounder. When I started, I didn’t realize how vital structured goal-setting was. I had big ambitions but no real framework to help the team achieve them. Without clear goals, it was like setting sail without a map. We kept drifting.
That’s when I discovered the power of S.M.A.R.T. goals—specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Setting these types of goals gave us a clear roadmap to follow, and suddenly, things started falling into place. No more ambiguity or wandering.

- Incorporate S.M.A.R.T criteria when assigning tasks: Ensure every task is clearly defined and has a measurable outcome. This helps track progress and keeps everyone aligned with the mission.
- Revisit goals regularly: Every few weeks, gather your team to review goals, assess progress, and adjust as needed. This keeps everyone accountable and focused.
Structured goal setting doesn’t just keep teams on track—it motivates them. When everyone knows what they’re working toward, progress becomes more tangible, and the energy shifts from “what do we do next?” to “let’s make it happen.”
3. Building Resilience
Challenges aren’t roadblocks; they’re detours to discovery. In the beginning, I saw setbacks as failures, but over time, I began to see them as opportunities to grow. Every mistake, every obstacle, taught me something invaluable about leadership and about myself.
I learned that resilience is not just about bouncing back after setbacks, but about the ability to move forward with even greater clarity and focus. Leaders who embrace challenges and learn from them are better equipped to guide their teams through difficult times.
Actionable Step:
- Conduct “What went wrong” sessions: After every project or initiative, set aside time to reflect on what didn’t go as planned. Ask your team what they learned and what could be improved for next time. This helps shift the focus from blame to growth.
- Celebrate lessons learned, not just successes: Success is important, but the lessons we learn from our failures are just as valuable. Recognize the growth that comes from adversity.
By encouraging my team to embrace resilience, I helped them bounce back stronger after every challenge. They became more adaptable and willing to take risks, knowing that every misstep was a stepping stone toward success.
💡 Practical Guidance You Can Implement Right Away:
- Create a goal-setting framework visible to all team members: Make sure everyone knows what they’re working toward and how their progress will be measured. This transparency fosters accountability.
- Practice Transparent Tuesday: This is a practice I adopted where, every Tuesday, I openly address any issues or challenges the team is facing before they escalate. It builds trust and keeps everyone on the same page.
- Dedicate time to nurture resilience, both personally and within your team: Resilience isn’t something that just happens. It’s something you actively build over time. Dedicate time for personal growth and encourage your team to do the same.
Leadership transformation isn’t a one-time fix—it’s a series of intentional actions that, over time, lead to greater clarity, accountability, and growth. It’s a continuous journey, not a destination.
