My passion for caring for Kangaroo's began many years ago.
We bought a lovely bush house, was to be for week ends ,
But the wildlife was so amazing,we packed our bags and stayed for good.
One day while walking a bush track,I found a joey hanging from the wire on a fence.
I took her home to care for her, and named her honey.
She was the first of many to come into care.
Carers for wildlife save joey's that have lost their mum to road kill.
You need a cloth pouch to hag them up in,like their mums pouch.
They have to be feed every three hours when young, withlactoses free milk, from a bottle.
To raise a joey can take up to eighteen months.
The milk powder is costly,so to are the vet bills when needed.
They grow with you thinking you are their mum.
They trust you with their life.
To lose one will break your heart.
One joey had just been released back into the wild.
Her name was Cleo.
She would come back on dusk every night for a feed.
Four day's went by, and I became worried,as she had still not come home for a feed.
So I walked up to the road side, and there she was,she had been hit by a car,and killed.
It was a hot summers day,we had not had rain for some time.
So took me three hours to dig a grave for her.
I was in tears from her lose, hot and tired from digging her grave.
I placed flowers and rocks on her grave and sat crying.
A friend had heard the bad news and came over with a bottle of wine.
We sat together, drinking the wine and both crying.
My friend went home, and i sat on the front step, still in tears.
Then suddenly out from the bush jumps Cleo.
I was overjoyed,I hugged her.
Who i buried that day,I have no idea?
Cleo grow up to have many joeys, even today she comes back at dusk.
Another joey Golly Gosh, had a bad day, he got himself stuck in the mud,as the dam was drying up from the drought.
He found his way home covered in mud, even his eyes were closed over.
I hosed him down the best that i could.
He jumped on my bed, and stayed for four days recovering.
My husband had to sleep on the lounge chair.
Another kangaroo that had been in the bush for two years, became very sick.
He jumped in the house one day, straight onto my bed,and stayed for two weeks,I had to go to the vet ,He gave me the medication that was needed.
And I gave the kangaroo three jabs a day for a week.
When better he went back to the bush.
I have many of these story to tell, but would take to long.
I have two joey's at this moment, just about to release.
They go out at night, come back each day for milk and a feed.
They spend the day laying around on the rugs and pillows i have out the back deck for them.
One joey has a baby of her own already.
She lets me peek inside her pouch to see it.
Was the size of a jelly bean when i first saw it.
Now it's the size of a mouse.
Will be three to four months before, the baby pops it's head out.
I was attacked by a big wild kangaroo three years ago.
I was in hospital for two weeks,i almost died.
I had a collapsed lung, three broken ribs, lacerations that were so deep.
My breast was slashed open,i was a mess.
But I still love and care for kangaroos.
It's my passion,my life now,i will care for them for as long as i can.
