Jack Ma's own story

“I didn't have a rich father. I tried to get into college three times, but I failed all three times. I applied to Harvard University ten times. They all failed. At least they didn't want to see me. The last time I applied to Teachers College. Three out of four people from our town got in. But I didn't get in. Then I applied to different jobs thirty times, and all of them failed.

It was very difficult at that time. And it was a very difficult time for me. In the end, I taught at a university for ten dollars.

In 1994, I thought of creating something called the Internet. Twenty-three people I proposed it to were against my idea. They said it was nonsense. At that time, we didn't really know anything about computers, and we didn't know anything about the Internet. I never thought I was good. Nobody believed in me. Everyone said I was crazy. They said I thought it was impossible.

I tried to borrow three thousand dollars from the bank. After three months, I didn't get it. I met thirty or forty capitalists. I didn't get a good response from them either.

When I started Alibaba, everyone said it was useless. But I said that if we kept working, it would develop someday. I really didn't think it would be this big. But I believed that this situation would come to me someday. So I had to work hard to prove it to myself that day. It was a bitter experience.

So that day we raised fifty thousand dollars from 18 founders. We felt like we had started it.

In the first three years, we didn't make a single dollar in profit from our business. That was not a good level at all.

Why did I keep doing this (Alibaba)?

Because I got good emails from my customers. They said this is amazing, we can't pay you, but this has helped us a lot. If you keep helping us....., one day you will be okay........ I believed what they said.

Little by little we built our business. Little by little we built the economy and infrastructure of our business.

Now after 16 years, we have the Ali Baba Group. We have the T Mall Group, we have the TaoBao Group, we have Ali pay. And people say we are very smart.

They ask how I built this company.?

Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Jack Wetch, Lary Page, Mark Zuckerberg. The difference between these people and other people is that they always think optimistically about the future. They never blame anyone. They always try to solve other people's problems. Every time you look at the world with optimism, you will be given a good opportunity.

People always say the same thing. Jack, where is our opportunity? We have no job, I don't have that, I don't have this. The most valuable thing you have is your youth. Never complain. Let others complain.

Think of different ways. And start doing them as soon as you think of them.”
