How to Get Out of Your Own Way and Let Your Life Shine
"I wish I could show you, when you are lonely or in the dark, a wonderful light of your own self." ~ Hafiz of Shiraz
I have been in a state of wanting to be happy for as long as I can remember.
I thought I was looking everywhere. I tried relationships, work, a fun trip, and a life full of friends and work, but I felt anxious. I was unhappy with life. The years of treatment trying to fix my problems did not give me a sense of peace in any way I thought possible.
I knew there was going to be more, and I’m glad to tell you I found it while learning to get out of the way.
The Power of Habits
Without realizing it, I became trapped in a web of thinking and emotions that were controlling my daily life. My mind went on and on about judgments, expectations, worries, anger, and issues about what should and should not happen.
And I ignored the feelings of fear and discomfort that ran through the water almost without stopping.
Life did happen, but with a constant internal analysis of how things were not right. Not surprisingly, I was not happy.
Fast forward now, and things are very different. No more unnecessary anxiety, regrets, or getting caught up in the psychological issues of other people or me. Even my body is comfortable without this disruption of hiding. It's all very open, very new!
Here's what I found.
Finding Freedom
Getting out of the way means getting used to your inner world. You find what you are doing that makes you suffer to choose peace instead.
Surprisingly, you realize that you can press a break at any time and step back from the clutter of old, redesigned habits.
When you do that, you see what is really going on: the pain of being trapped in an old-fashioned way of thinking, the power to control your thoughts, and the tension that comes from letting your emotions dominate.
With your eyes wide open, you are given the opportunity to live in ways that are intelligent, acceptable, and in harmony with your deepest desires. Finally, clarity comes.
Getting out of the way looks like this:
Ask yourself, "At this point, what do I really want to hear?"
The answer connects you to your true purpose for happiness, peace, and clarity. After all, you are in the middle of freedom.
Be aware of thoughts and feelings that draw your attention.
See how you get on the road to happiness. Do you live in the belief that it is not enough? Do you consider yourself a victim of your past? Do you describe yourself in grief or in fear? That is why you suffer.
Be a friend of your experience by looking at what’s available, but know that you don’t have to control it.
In the meantime, don't hold back from getting involved in stressful situations. Let your emotions be without acting in harmony with them. This is the most loving way you can be with yourself.
Feel the space left when you are no longer connected to thoughts and feelings.
Even if for just a moment, you have found what it is like to get out of the way. Here you are — perfect and relaxed, mature enough to have fun, to make wise decisions based on love, not fear and limitations. You realize that life can be very simple. It affects the chances of living your happiness.
There is no need to change your mind or remove any feelings to get out of the way. Just be aware of your inner knowledge. Be aware of how pressuring your self-description might be.
Be aware that you can make the choice to live a full life now, without any restrictions you have set, with a clear mind and an open heart.
It is a simple, effective way to experience the joy that comes from every moment.
How to Do It: Example
Let's take anxiety as an example. I used to worry about everything; I was full of "what if not" - what if my plans didn't work out, what if I made the wrong decision, what if I didn't get it right, what if I couldn't cope. It was endless.
I remember having troubled years ago whether or not I should go to work-related social activities. At that moment, I knew I was really going to get out of the way, so I stopped and felt a moment of gratitude - this was my best opportunity for freedom. Touched on what I really wanted, which was supposed to be peace, presence, and clarity.
Instead of worrying, I chose to be curious.
I realized that my attention had been diverted from negative thoughts about the future. What if I don't know anyone? What if I feel uncomfortable there? What if it's a waste of time?
My mind was filled with these troubling thoughts. And when I went back to check them out, I realized that they were dampening my enthusiasm, shutting me out of opportunities, and preventing me from going out of my comfort zone (which was not so comfortable, anyway).
To bring attention to my feelings, I realized that I was trapped in fear, with confusion everywhere in my body. It was during the light bulb when I saw how powerful these feelings were, even though they had never known them before.
When I saw these thoughts and worries, I breathed. I turned my attention away from them and returned to my normal existence. There was an immediate sense of relief.
I no longer feed on worrying thoughts, the tension subsides, and I find it easier to make a wise, calm decision about whether to leave or not. I realized that the current state of health is right. It was amazing to see that anxiety could not be chosen.
It took a while, but as I became more and more observant when anxiety began to take hold, I began to see opportunities open up. Instead of needing to get everything, I can relax and hope. Instead of being limited by fear, there was room for amazement, art, appreciation, and a simple life.
I was shocked to see how deeply this type of anxiety had penetrated my life.
