The interest in understanding a positive mindset has increased over the years with research highlighting many of its key benefits. Positive imagery, optimism, and positive self-talk are all part of developing a positive mindset, which is crucial in today’s world. While positive thinking is essential to developing a positive mindset, it does not mean that people who have a positive mindset are out of touch with reality or otherwise incapable of acknowledging the difficulty of their current circumstances. They choose to remain positive despite the negativity in their life and this is crucial for multiple reasons.

The need to cultivate a positive mindset

Having a positive mindset is helpful because it offers many benefits such as:

• Reduced depression rates

• Lower stress levels

• Reduced risk of cardiovascular and other diseases

• Improved coping ability

• Higher level of confidence

• Higher lifespan

• Improved psychological as well as physical wellbeing

These benefits point to the need to learn how we can cultivate a positive mindset in our daily lives. It’s important to note that cultivating a positive mindset is a choice that must be made every day. It’s not just a state of being that can be achieved by practicing certain tasks. It requires commitment and dedication to remain positive even when things aren’t going the way we want them to.

Ways to cultivate a positive mindset

• Count your blessings

There’s a lot to be thankful for. Sometimes, the experiences we have can make us forget about the little things we should be thankful for. Spend some time every day on counting your blessings. You can do this mentally by stating what you’re grateful for or you can even maintain a gratitude journal where you make note of the things you’re grateful for in life. Try to find something to be grateful for each day, no matter how your day went. Being thankful for even the basics like a loving family, shelter, and food to sustain yourself will make a big difference to how you experience life.

• Mingle with positive people

Have you noticed yourself feeling drained of energy around pessimistic people? This is common because we tend to vibe at the same level as those we surround ourselves with. Being around someone pessimistic all the time can rub off on you and you don’t want that. Pick your company wisely. Surround yourself with positive people because this will likely mean that you’ll experience more positive affirmations, experiences, and gratitude. Such people will also be a greater sense of support for you and can help give you a different perspective to life that will enable you to remain positive.

• Challenge self-defeating beliefs and language

The way we speak about ourselves becomes ingrained in us after sometime and exercises a powerful control over how we experience life. Instead of negative self-talk and self-defeating beliefs, focus on positive self-talk. Rather than highlighting everything you’re not good at, try to identify your strengths and see how you can make the most use of them. Hype yourself up and give yourself the confidence to go out into the world and achieve all that you’re capable of. You’re definitely worth it – you just need to start believing it.

• Focus on learning lessons from failures

You’re going to experience failures in your life. We all do. Failures can serve as important lessons on what went wrong and teach us how to do better next time as we strive to succeed. Don’t let failures derail you from your intended path. Instead of thinking, “I’m good for nothing, there’s no point trying to do this”, focus on the lessons learnt from the failure and make changes accordingly to achieve what you want.

• Be mindful of the present moment

We’re often fretting over the past or anxious about the future and that prevents us from being mindful of the present experience we’re having, even if it is a positive one. Practice mindfulness to bring your attention back to what you’re experiencing in the present moment to cultivate a positive mindset. This will help you to let go of worries of the past or uncertainties of the future and truly be one with the present moment.
