Lesley born in Stirling, Scotland, Paterson was a fierce competitor from a young age. She played rugby with boys until she was no longer allowed, then turned to fell running and eventually triathlon. By 16, she was already competing at the national level, and over the years, she became a five-time world champion in off-road triathlon. She won the 2011, 2012 and 2018 XTERRA Triathlon World Championships as well as the 2012 and 2018 editions of the World Triathlon Cross Championships.

Despite her success in sports, Paterson harbored a deep passion for storytelling. She studied English and drama at Loughborough University and later earned a master's degree in theatre at San Diego State University. While competing as a triathlete, she nurtured her dream of becoming a screenwriter. In 2006, she and her writing partner, Ian Stokell, acquired the rights to adapt All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque's classic anti-war novel.

The road to getting the film made was anything but smooth. Hollywood is notoriously difficult to break into, and Paterson faced years of rejection. Financing the project was a challenge, and at times, she even used her triathlon prize money to keep the dream alive. But just as she had done in sports, she refused to give up. 

In 2016 , just one day before competing in a triathlon in Costa Rica in 2016, she broke her shoulder in a bike crash, when she crashed her bike and broke her shoulder Despite the excruciating pain, she partipated in the race.
