“Why not take a chance, if I don’t, I will never know”. Theresa Mitchell, a 30-something was thinking of ways how she could get rich or find temporary happiness. It was just a few weeks before she decided to play the lottery, with the jackpot being $600 million. Theresa was the kind of person to take her chances, just 10 years before she played a random scratch-off winning $300. Melancholy about her life, she yearned for more, “have your ever worked so hard that it didn’t even make a dent”? asking her co-workers…shrugs was their response. “I know exactly what you’re talking about Theresa” her co-worker Maria responded. “Like you’re hitting a brick wall to no avail”, “exactly” Theresa said.
She had huge plans, but there was a feeling that she waited a little to late to pursue her dreams and goals. An overthinker her life, she had a deep-seated fear of missing out, taking her chances on lottery tickets, scratch-off…hell even saying yes to weekend outings with friends, just in case she was to meet her “future husband”. Sure, Theresa knew what she wanted in life, but it was the implementation of the dreams and goals that was the problem. Her therapist suggested that she journal her thoughts in a black not book, which he gave all his clients. This book was the closest thing to a friend, her wildest dreams and goals were in this book. She manifested her dream life, what her future family would be, even winning the lottery.
Theresa challenged herself, she would check her state lottery website and data stats about winning tickets. She knew that the more a ticket cost the higher chances of winning; and every first Tuesday of the month a new scratch-off would come out. For three months she saved her money diligently, worked overtime, even took on a part-time job. She saved $1,500 and build up two-weeks paid time off to “ticket hunting”. During her research, she looked up convenience stores with the most lottery wins. Theresa had a plan, in her black book she wrote $20,000, just a random number, if not six figures just enough to get her on her way.
“I may not win a million, but five figures damn it”! So, with much determination, she set off her journey leaving home at 5am. The trip will not be in vain, of course “Let’s go to the Biltmore Estate”, located in the mountains of North Carolina. “I can visit the mom-and-pop stores,” she realized that they could be hidden treasures tucked in the crevasses of the hills and valleys. A few pitstops later, she arrived at the Biltmore, looking at the grand palace stretching over 10 miles alone, “I could live like this” she thought.
After the tour, she decided to visit a quiet little restaurant she looked up on Southern Living as one of the best eateries in North Carolina. The food was delicious and the view…the view of Blue Ridge was breathtaking. Theresa started to cry, and a realization came over her…” I’m grateful for what I have…in the present moment”. “In order to get what I want, I have to be grateful, thankful.” Upon leaving the mountains, she stopped at a gas station nearby. She decided to buy two tickets, try her luck anyway, “if I win, I win and if I lose, I lose” she thought. “I’ll take the number 10, and the number two please” …” the last two tickets” the kind store attended said. “Fingers crossed” as Theresa and store attended laughed.
Theresa went to her car, with her heartbeat a mile a minute, she found the nearest coin to scratch off. As she started, the first ticket scratched $20 won “ok, cool”. The second ticket, all numbers scratch she turned hot, then cold. The number 34, ironically the same age as she, read $20,000. She ran back into the store but slowed down to not have attention to herself…the look on her face, the store attended knew. “Congratulations” with a smile on her face. “You know this isn’t the first time this has happened”, “you better go to the state office before it close”. With three hours from the state capitol, Theresa showed her lucky ticket in and the big cardboard check, she was on cloud nine.
“Mom look” Theresa decided to surprise her mother of what happened. With happy tears in both of their eyes and thinking of what to do with the money, Theresa thought, “the magic of letting go can take you a long way”.
