The poem “Fading Memory “ was originally created in 2014 during my second semester of grade eleven. That semester I had signed up for a writing class cause of my will to be become an improved writer. I remember being so exited and couldn’t wait to start. All I could think was does this course really exist in my school. It was pure joy and the best part was that some of my friends that I didn’t know wrote were in the class too!
One day during the subjects of poems our teacher gave us a mini assignment to do. The assignment was to pick a style of poem. So that meant we had an array of choices. You could do free verse , a Limerick , or a haiku etc….the list goes on. The amount of results possible to create were endless.
Now the three types of poetry are , narrative, dramatic or lyrical. That part was the least of my concerns. We had till the following Friday to have our poems. I ran through the list of poems I knew how to do (yes even in grade eleven , I had trouble with most poems).
It took me the whole entire period just to think of what I could possibly write about. Keep in mind my classes at the time were only fifty minutes long. Still it felt like a long while.
Scanning through my mind and staring endlessly at a blank piece of paper can get mildly frustrating. Eventually I decided to recall a dramatic , sad or even happy time in my life. so first choose a topic. From there I would write a couple poetic lines and see what design of poem would be better.
First thing though before moving forward I should take and explain what I chose to write the poem about. Getting A little too ahead of myself. So I went through what everybody goes through in high school. The heartbreaks and the betrayal of friends. Im sure we can all agree we’ve all had at least one high school moments where everything just constantly went down hill. The past can never be erased ,but what we can do is find things to help us move on. I had a couple heart breaks that ended for the better and well most if not all of my “friends” were never really any true friends of mine to put it bluntly. (any of you who happen to read this I know there are a couple who always stood by me and I am extremely grateful).
So I chose to use my poem as an opportunity to help me move on from everything. I went with an easy ABC poem format. From there i found it simple to let the words flow onto the page.
To break down the poem:
“ A- A once beautiful memory
B - Broken apart
C - Crashing over closed wounds”
What Im saying there is the memory is starting out great. Its beautiful and nothing is wrong. Then all of the sudden it’s like the memory was a mirror and someone put their fist through it , therefore breaking it apart. Now those broken pieces of glass are falling over previously closed wounds.
“D - Depression fading
E - Elapsing over time
F - Finding peace
G - Gathering hope “
Those four lines are the middle of the story. The begining tragedy has already struck and now we must move on. Moving on doesn’t happen over night , time is needed and it’s different for everyone. The last two lines of the poem are as follows:
“ H - Healing from the past
I- Igniting a new spark”
This is where we’ve moved on and have sparked a new journey.
I hope you all enjoyed this insight to my poem “ Fading Memory”. Thank you fore reading. Feel free to share with your friends and family or on your social media. Stay tuned for more posts. .
