Elon Musk is a South African-born American entrepreneur and business magnate who is best known for his work in the technology industry. Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1971 and showed an early aptitude for technology and business. He taught himself computer programming at the age of 12 and by the age of 17, he had sold his first computer program, a game called Blastar. After completing his undergraduate studies in physics and economics at the University of Pretoria, he moved to Canada to attend the University of Pennsylvania. He received dual bachelor's degrees in economics and physics. He then pursued a PhD in energy physics at Stanford University, but left after two days to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions.

In 1999, Compaq acquired Zip2 for $307 million in cash and $34 million in stock options. Musk used the proceeds from the sale to start X.com, an online payment company.
