Change Your Inner Voice, Change Your Outer World

Because if your inner voice sounds like a tired uncle, your life will too

By Pure CrownPublished 9 months ago 3 min read

You know that voice in your head—the one that whispers “You’re not good enough” when you mess up or “Let’s just eat one more snack and try again tomorrow” when it’s time to do something hard?

Yeah, that voice is the real landlord of your life. And the truth is, whatever that voice says, your world will obey.

If your inner voice is full of self-doubt, fear, and negativity, your outer world will reflect that. But if you start feeding it truth, confidence, and possibility? Your life begins to level up—even if everything around you stays the same.

Let’s be real: the problem isn’t always the world. Sometimes, it’s the nonsense we’re telling ourselves inside our heads.

A funny story (you won’t forget this one)

So there’s this guy, let's call him Ade. Ade had one dream: to start a small cooking business. He was the king of jollof rice in his compound—fluffy, red, smoky… his rice could bring peace to a family feud.

Everyone told him, “Ade, you should sell this rice now!”

But every time he tried, his inner voice would say things like:

“What if nobody buys it?”

“You don’t have a professional pot.”

“What if someone calls it soggy rice on Instagram?”

So Ade kept holding back. One day, he finally decided to try. He cooked a big pot, made flyers on Canva, and announced “Ade’s Kitchen” launch.

Guess what happened?

As he was carrying the pot outside, he tripped and the whole pot of jollof fell… inside the gutter. The rice is planted in the drainage system. Even the flies paused for a moment of silence.

He ran inside, frustrated and red-eyed. His inner voice screamed, “You see?! I told you! You’re not meant for this! Just stick to eating, not selling!”

He didn’t cook again for 3 months.

But then one of his friends, Ada, visited and found out what happened. She told him, “Guy, it was just a mistake. Gutter rice doesn’t mean you’re cursed. It means you're human. Start again.”

This time, he didn’t listen to his old inner voice. He gave it a new script: “I’m good at this. Accidents happen. I’m building something great.”

He started again.

And today? Ade’s Kitchen now delivers meals to three offices in his city. All because he stopped listening to that rude little voice in his head.

Your inner voice is a tour guide . Imagine your inner voice as a tour guide through life. If the guide keeps saying, “This place is boring,” “You’re lost,” “It’s dangerous,” then even paradise will feel like a prison.

But if your guide says, “You’ve got this,” “This is part of the journey,” “Keep going,” then even a tough season will feel like a training ground.

What’s your inner guide saying?

Because the words you hear most are not from your mom, your boss, or your ex—they’re from you.

Real-life example: My friend, the “academic failure”

I had a friend who used to call herself “a born academic failure.” She said it so often that even when she scored well, she’d still say, “It was just luck.”

But one day, her mentor gave her a challenge: “Change what you call yourself for one month. Speak like you have already passed.”

So she started calling herself “an intelligent work-in-progress.”

Guess what happened? She started studying with confidence. She started asking questions in class. She even volunteered to teach others.

That semester? Best results she’d ever gotten.

All because she changed the background music in her head.

So, what should you do?

Here’s the secret: you can’t always control your situation. But you can always train your inner voice.

Start noticing what it says when things go wrong. Then correct it like you would a child saying nonsense.

Replace “I can’t do this” with “I’m figuring it out.”

Replace “I always fail” with “I’m learning from this.”

Replace “Nobody likes me” with “I like me, and that’s a good start.”

Final thought

Changing your inner voice is like upgrading your phone’s software. Everything runs smoother. Fewer glitches. More potential. And the best part? It’s free—no subscription required.

So next time you hear that negative voice creeping in, pause and ask: “Is this voice building my future or breaking it?”

If it’s helping n, —change it. Because once you change your inner voice, the outer world has no choice but to follow.
