Overcoming Negative Thinking

By Chana SaacksPublished 6 years ago 3 min read

Whispers scream in the moonlight, fighting every chance they can. The thoughts take over because the minds walls were down for an instant. Negativity seeps in and now I’m too far gone because my temperature has risen, I know I can’t be the only one.

The mind has a life of its own, it takes what the world gives it and makes it its own. Though some things don’t need to be read into, some people are just not worth your time. Feelings are a fragile thing, keep it sacred or else you’ll lose your sense of self.

Other peoples actions and expressions should not enter your thoughts and make you doubt yourself. Ruminating and obsessive thinking can get to you the most. Don’t let other people define you because you know your worth. If you don’t, that’s okay because you’ll learn one day to adore all that you are for you are worth it.

The thought of someone having power over you seems like quite a scary thought. Though if you think about it, that is the world we live in today. Where rules that are inhumane are meant to be followed and guidelines that are impossible to mimic.

For example, take a look at the amount of control that other people have on you regarding your body. The mere essence of it disgusts me and I will tell you why.

Why should anyone tell you what is considered healthy, especially when these types of rules change on a daily basis. Why do I feel ashamed that I’m a size ten or twelve in clothing, when that is a perfect size for me.

The BMI (Body Mass Index) is not even remotely accurate for it measures someone as a whole and does not take anything else into account. Like gender, muscle mass, bone density etc. It purely takes into consideration your height and weight. We all know there’s so much more to a human being, to being a living creature than your height and weight.

Take into account your feelings, how you feel at a certain weight because one number may just not be the right number for you. As much as one may want to fit into a size eight, getting to that stage where you are a size eight may just cause more health issues than not.

What about personality? Looking on the inside rather than only the external.

We are born with a heart that feels all types of feelings; love, hate, sadness, anger, happiness, shame etc. We are more than our bodies.

Let me say that again… We are more than our bodies. We are also more than our feelings because we are not made up of one thing, we are a combination of everything, nature and nurture.

Never let your body define who you are.

Never let somebody else's expectations define who you are.

Never let your own expectations define who you are.

Then what defines you? All of you.

You are a delicate, complicated, intricate piece of art with so many parts, there’s no way to call you one single name. Take everything you are, cherish it because you are gold and don’t let anyone, not even yourself tell you different.

Life will have many opportunities to bring you down. Don’t let that stop you from reaching up and grabbing your potential. To get to a place of knowing your self worth one must work for it. Tearing yourself down one word at a time won’t do you any good. Be kind, be patient and be gentle. As the famous saying goes “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. Believe you can and then you will.

Pain is inevitable, I know that. What I didn’t know was that perspective can change. All it takes is a pair of different colored glasses, and of course a bit of work. I’m almost there, I can feel it. I want to share that with the world :)
