Are you looking to start a new fitness routine but don’t know where to begin? If so, you’re not alone! Many of us have experienced the same thing. But don’t worry, I have some tips to get you on your way to achieving your fitness goals. As a beginner, I’ve had to learn the hard way, so here are 6 tips for a successful fitness routine as told by a beginner!
1) Find What Works for You
It is important to find a fitness routine that works best for you. Everyone’s body and lifestyle are different, so it is important to experiment to find what works best for you. Try out different types of activities or exercises and get to know your body. If one type of exercise doesn't work out, don't get discouraged, keep trying until you find something that works. For example, if running isn't your thing, try biking or swimming instead.
Also, consider the time commitment involved in any particular activity. How much time can you realistically commit to a workout routine? If you have limited time, focus on high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or other shorter-duration workouts. However, if you have more time available, longer workouts such as weightlifting or even yoga may be more beneficial for you.
Once you have found a routine that works for you and your lifestyle, stick with it! Consistency is key to any successful fitness routine. With consistent effort and dedication, you will soon be on your way to achieving your fitness goals.
2) Set Small, Achievable Goals
One of the best tips for creating a successful fitness routine is to set small, achievable goals. Starting off with smaller, more attainable goals will help to keep you motivated and ensure that you don’t get overwhelmed. When setting your goals, make sure that they are realistic and achievable. It might be tempting to set a goal to lose 10 pounds in two weeks, but it’s not realistic. Aim to lose one or two pounds a week instead. Similarly, if you’re trying to build muscle, try to start with a weight range that you can comfortably lift for a few reps without straining.
Small goals also help you keep track of your progress. Check in with yourself regularly and evaluate how far you’ve come. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may seem. All of these small wins will add up to bigger progress in the long run.
Don’t forget to be kind to yourself when setting goals – we all make mistakes and that’s OK. If you miss a day of your workout routine, don’t let it derail you completely – just get back on track the next day. Having realistic expectations and understanding that it’s okay to fail sometimes is key to a successful fitness routine.
3) Incorporate Variety
When starting a fitness routine, it’s important to keep things interesting and varied. Not only will this help keep you from getting bored and quitting, but it’ll also help ensure that you’re exercising different muscle groups and working on different parts of your body. Aim for a combination of cardio exercises, strength training, and stretching. You can also mix up your routine by using different kinds of equipment, like a treadmill, weights, or exercise bike. Additionally, don’t be afraid to try out new activities like yoga, kickboxing, or pilates. It can be a great way to stay motivated and keep your workouts fresh.
4) Schedule It In
Making time for exercise can be challenging, especially if you’re a beginner. But by scheduling it in like any other important appointment, you’ll have a much better chance of sticking to your fitness routine. Whether you write it down on a calendar or set a reminder on your phone, having an appointment with yourself to exercise is an effective way to stay motivated.
You don’t need to dedicate hours each day to make progress. Even short 10-minute bursts of exercise can help you achieve your goals. For example, if you want to improve your cardiovascular endurance, try scheduling two 5-minute walks every day. On the other hand, if you want to build muscle, aim for two 15-minute strength training sessions throughout the week.
Also, don’t forget to give yourself flexibility when scheduling your workouts. Life can get busy and unexpected things may come up. That’s why it’s important to build in some wiggle room into your routine so you don’t feel like you have to miss out on something important. You may even find that your flexibility helps you enjoy your workouts more.
By scheduling your workouts and treating them like any other important commitment, you’ll be one step closer to achieving your fitness goals.
5) Make It a Habit
One of the most important aspects of any fitness routine is making it a habit. Without a regular exercise routine, you’re likely to forget about it and miss out on the potential benefits. To make sure that doesn’t happen, start small and build from there.
Start by setting yourself realistic goals that are achievable in the short-term. This could mean going for a walk each day or hitting the gym once a week. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as you do something regularly and stick to it. Once you’ve made some progress, you can increase your intensity or duration to challenge yourself.
Incorporate some flexibility into your routine too. Allow yourself the occasional rest day or switch up the type of exercise you’re doing if you’re getting bored. You don’t have to do the same thing every single day, but finding something that you enjoy and making it part of your life is key.
Finally, hold yourself accountable. Set reminders on your phone or tell a friend about your goals and plans. Checking in with yourself regularly can help keep you motivated and on track. Having a support network around you can also be helpful in staying accountable, especially when times get tough.
Making exercise a habit may be hard at first, but it can become second nature over time. Don’t give up, keep pushing yourself and remember why you started in the first place. With some dedication and consistency, you’ll soon be seeing the results of all your hard work!
6) Hold Yourself Accountable
When it comes to making progress in your fitness journey, the last step is always accountability. It’s not enough to just set goals and plan workouts, you need to make sure that you’re doing what you say you’re going to do. Accountability is the best way to ensure that you’re making the most of your time and that you’re sticking with your routine.
One way to hold yourself accountable is to keep track of your progress. Logging your workouts can be a great way to stay motivated, as you can look back and see how far you’ve come. Tracking your nutrition can also help, as it will allow you to identify any areas where you can improve.
It’s also important to have a support system of friends or family who are willing to hold you accountable. When we’re surrounded by people who understand our goals and encourage us to stay on track, it makes it much easier to succeed. Similarly, finding an accountability partner or joining a group fitness class can help to keep you motivated and focused on your goals.
At the end of the day, having an attitude of self-discipline and commitment is key. You need to be honest with yourself and follow through on your promises if you want to make meaningful progress. Every day is an opportunity to make yourself better, so make sure you’re taking full advantage of it.
