But if we approach each day with forethought and intention, we can set ourselves up for greater personal fulfillment. You want to set yourself up for success, from the moment you wake up until the moment your head hits the pillow at night.
With mindfulness, boundary-setting, and a measured attitude, you can start to hone in on the parts of life that have the most personal meaning to you. And it doesn’t require a total life overhaul—just a few small changes can make a world of difference.

1. Make Your Bed
It sounds deceptively simple—will taking two minutes to make your bed really improve your entire day? Yes, because it’s not just about keeping the bed neat. It’s about setting an intention.
Making your bed immediately upon waking means you start your day by accomplishing something, setting you up for a day full of success. It also signals that sleep time is over, helping your brain reset and prepare for the next phase of action.
This one small task can have a snowball effect on your productivity, giving you a boost of adrenaline. What else will you be able to accomplish next?
At the end of the day, returning to a clean room is incredibly satisfying and comforting. A clean room is a restful room, setting the stage for a great night’s sleep. The better you sleep, the better you will feel. And then you wake up the next morning, make the bed, and the cycle continues.
2. Morning Exercise
Most adults should get approximately 20-30 minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise per day for optimal health. Getting that workout in during the morning is an especially good way to set yourself up for a better day.
Our muscles stiffen up during sleep overnight, so working out in the morning helps loosen them up and refreshes you. It gets your circulation going, sending blood to your brain so you can operate at peak performance.
Morning exercise also energizes you, readying you to tackle your next challenge. Try taking an invigorating morning walk to wake yourself up with fresh air and cardio.
You could even bring your coffee and do it with a friend. If it’s raining, pull up a quick yoga, Pilates, or cardio video online and exercise from the comfort of your home. Commit to making exercise a vital part of your day.
3. Have a Routine
While a little spontaneity is important to keep life interesting, most of us benefit from having a daily routine. A routine gives us a sense of stability and structure, so even when times get tough, we have something familiar to rely on.
It also trains our body and brain to anticipate certain tasks, making daily challenges feel more manageable. A routine frees up your brain from constantly deciding what’s next, allowing you to focus on more important tasks.
To create a routine that works for you, write down everything you already do during the day. Review your list, highlight priorities, and cluster similar tasks for efficiency. Be flexible and adjust your routine as your life evolves.
4. Read Every Day
A 2009 study by Sussex University found that reading can reduce stress levels by up to 68%. So, reading at least a few pages every day can make your day better.
Reading relieves stress, exposes you to new perspectives, enhances creativity, expands your vocabulary, and boosts concentration. It’s exercise for your brain and a balm for your spirit.
Start with just five pages a day, and you might find it addictive. Not sure where to begin? Visit your local library or browse their e-book options. Carry a book or e-book during your commute or downtime to make reading a habit.
5. Practice Mindful Consumption
When we’re stressed, it’s easy to lean into habits like overeating or retail therapy for a quick dopamine hit. While indulgence offers fleeting pleasure, it’s often followed by guilt or regret.
Be intentional about what you consume. Drink plenty of water—six to eight glasses daily—eat balanced meals with lean proteins, leafy greens, and healthy fats. Don’t skip breakfast; it sets the tone for your day.
Monitor what you buy. Is it necessary? Adopting a minimalist lifestyle can lead to a more peaceful and fulfilling life.
6. Give Back
Helping someone else have a better day will make your day brighter too. Acts of kindness boost your mood, improve your confidence, and strengthen social bonds.
Start with small gestures like complimenting a stranger, donating unused clothes, or helping a neighbor. Or volunteer at a soup kitchen, animal shelter, or organize a donation drive.
Giving back doesn’t have to be overwhelming—pick something meaningful yet manageable to fit your schedule.
7. Get Outside
Humans are meant to be in nature. Fresh air and sunlight recharge us, provide Vitamin D, and improve bone health, immunity, and cognitive function.
Take calls outside, walk or bike for errands, or plan a picnic with friends instead of binge-watching a show. Getting into nature helps you feel connected to the grand ecosystem around you.
