Fatherhood
Dad
Dear dad, I tried so hard to get you to be part of my life. The moment that you and my mom split up, it was like you weren't a parent anymore. At least, not mine. I have always wanted to know why? Why did you not want to be part of my life? Why was it so easy for you to just throw me away?

The Bluest Collar and the Biggest Heart
My father built houses, but never for black people. It started as a roofing and siding business. It was hard, big work in a soft, small town. My two brothers and I always had what we needed, and we knew better than to want more. The only thing I wanted was to stop hearing the n-word at dinner.

The Journey To Discover My Dad
If you want to know "who" I really am, take a look at my father through my eyes. Bold and brave and sweet as pie he gave and gave; do you know why? A dad is more than, planted seeds it's watering, pruning and pulling weeds. He loved when things were good and bad and sacrificed what he could have had To be sure we had all that we'd need to live life well, more than just succeed. He knew things we could never know and showed us what it meant to grow Never give up, life can be hard you don't quit due to lousy cards But play the hand that you were dealt experience taught him, so he felt The obligation to equip his kids to pay it forward, as he did Leave this world better than you found for the ones who inherit this hallowed ground

The Most Important Thing in His Life
“Did I ever tell you what your Dad said to me when we first started dating?”, my stepmom asked me while I was on a weekend trip home. “He told me that you would always be the most important thing in his life”. I didn’t know in that moment her reason for telling me this, but I had definitely not heard it before. The tears welling up in my eyes confirmed it.

My Father
It was a night I have never forgotten. I was in world I had never been part of. Careening at high speeds down the highway with four young men from our community, who were drinking as much beer, as fast as they could, between the liquor stores we stopped at on our way back to the city. I was returning to my dorm at the university after celebrating Thanksgiving at home with my parents. I had accepted this ride via my best friend from high school. It wasn’t that I didn’t know everyone in the car. After all, we had all grown up in the same small community. But I had never had the opportunity to be with them in this kind of circumstance. To put it bluntly, I was terrified.
