My Journey with Asics Running Shoes: Nimbus, Cumulus, MetaSpeed, Fujitrabuco & Novablast

From cloud-like comfort to race-day speed, here’s my personal experience testing different Asics models over the years - and why they remain my go-to running shoes.

I've tried several Asics running shoes throughout my years of experience with the brand.

Running for an extended period has shown me that inappropriate footwear transforms a simple 5K into agony but proper shoes deliver a floating sensation during running. During the past few years I have tested various brands but Asics remains my consistent choice. My continued use of Asics running shoes depends on their perfect blend of comfort features and durability with intelligent design elements.

I am sharing my complete history with Asics running shoes by describing the particular models I have used as well as their attractive features and the reasons why I select them for running and racing purposes.

The Early Days: Asics Gel-Nimbus

The first time I put my feet into Asics Gel-Nimbus running shoes I felt like I had rediscovered running. My running journey began with the Gel-Nimbus 19 model several years back and it turned out to be a complete game-changer. The cushioning system delivered both comfort and support which allowed me to extend my running distance without hurting my knees or shins.

During extended runs the Gel-Nimbus stood as the best option available. The GEL technology in the heel absorbed massive impact so effectively that my legs remained fresh throughout 15 kilometers. The Gel-Nimbus provided exceptional breathability through its mesh upper which prevented hot foot sensations even during hot summer runs.

Asics has made incremental improvements to the Gel-Nimbus 23 and 25 models without compromising the distinctive "cloud-like" sensation of the ride.

Speed and Responsiveness: Asics Gel-Cumulus

After spending one year with the Gel-Nimbus for all my runs I needed shoes that would be lighter and more responsive for both shorter distances and speed training. My search for a new running shoe led me to try the Asics Gel-Cumulus series.

The Gel-Cumulus 20 became my first pair and I immediately sensed its weight reduction. The shoe provided agility while maintaining enough cushioning to support 10K running distances. The midsole FlyteFoam component delivered an enhanced bounce that worked well for both interval training and tempo running.

The Cumulus stood out to me because it provided exceptional versatility in its design. The shoe allowed me to wear it for both quick 5K runs and longer weekend runs as well as everyday walking. I purchased the shoe as my “all-rounder” model because I needed it for daily activities and I have bought three sets throughout the years.

Pushing Limits: Asics MetaSpeed Sky

When I started entering more competitions I began to explore carbon-plated footwear options. Multiple brands offered their versions of carbon-plated shoes but I chose to use Asics MetaSpeed Sky. The running experience with this shoe differed completely from the Gel series because it provided a lightweight aggressive design made for speed.

The propulsive sensation of the MetaSpeed Sky encouraged me to increase my running speed. The initial step revealed noticeable energy return which prompted me to take longer strides. The performance design of these shoes makes them unsuitable for relaxed runs but they became my trusted tool on competition days.

The expensive price of these shoes paid off since they allowed me to reduce my half marathon time which made them well worth the investment.

Trail Adventures: Asics Gel-Fujitrabuco

Not all my runs happen on the road. I started trail running two years ago so I needed shoes which could handle uneven and rocky trail surfaces. I purchased the Asics Gel-Fujitrabuco for this purpose.

This shoe provided excellent traction on both slippery trails and steep downhill slopes. The rock protection plate under the foot delivered essential protection when running on difficult trails and the strengthened toe cap prevented several toe injuries from occurring.

I enjoyed the fact that it retained some of the Asics comfort that I was accustomed to — even on extended trail days, my feet remained well supported. For mixed terrain and moderate distances this shoe serves as an ideal choice.

Everyday Comfort: Asics Novablast

One of my most recent discoveries has been the Asics Novablast. I initially believed this shoe would serve as a recreational bounce-friendly shoe for everyday runs until it proved me wrong. The springy design provides an addictive sensation during running that has led me to wear it for both my recovery walks and everyday errands.

The Novablast features a stack height and rocker shape which provides an effortless running experience when I feel exhausted. The Gel-Nimbus offers a "cloud" sensation yet the Novablast delivers a "springboard" feeling.

My Experience with Asics Through the Years

I have tried numerous Asics shoes which led me to identify some essential features they maintain consistently.

Asics shoes maintain their durability for a distance of 600–800 km before showing noticeable signs of wear. Other brands have not managed to provide me with as much longevity.

Fit – The shape works for my foot type. The shoe prevents heel slippage and I experience few blister issues during my runs.

Asics successfully unites softness with stability in every type of running shoe from trainers to racers. They have a wide range of models that cater to every running style including neutral shoes and racers and shoes designed for trail running.

My selection process for new Asics shoes has evolved

Today I select different shoes for each type of my run:

Gel-Nimbus for long, easy miles.

The Gel-Cumulus and Novablast serve as my choices for runs that are between 10 and 15 kilometers and for standard workouts.

MetaSpeed Sky for races and speed sessions.

Gel-Fujitrabuco for trails.

Using the appropriate running shoe for my runs extends the lifespan of my footwear and produces better results for my legs.

Final Thoughts

Each runner has distinct preferences when it comes to sports because what works for me may not suit others. My years of shoe testing have proven that Asics delivers the three essential elements I require for my runs: comfort, durability and exciting performance.

All Asics models I have tested including the Gel-Nimbus and Novablast share the brand's signature DNA but each shoe has its unique character. If you seek a running shoe brand that will accompany you through multiple years of running Asics could be your perfect choice.
