Breaking the Silence:

Running for the Stories Too Often Unheard

On June 14th, I eagerly laced up my runners & prepared to join hundreds of others for the Breaking the Silence 5K Walk and Run! This incredible event was more than just a chance to be active; it united us all for a crucial cause: mental health awareness. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy, and being part of such a passionate community filled me with hope and inspiration. I’m grateful to have shared this significant experience with so many like-minded individuals.

Men’s Mental Health: A Crisis We Must Address

June is Mens Mental Health awarness month

June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, a critical time to confront a stark truth: too many lives—especially among men—are lost to the silence surrounding mental health. This urgency, this call to action, fueled every step I took during the walk, reminding me that raising awareness can lead to real change.

The Reality of Mental Health Challenge

Did you know that 1 in 5 Canadians experience mental health challenges each year? We must break the silence surrounding this issue. Every conversation and act of support helps dismantle stigma, empowering us all to share our experiences. Together, we can create a more understanding and compassionate community, encouraging everyone to speak out and seek help.

A Personal Call to Action

Whenever I return to Edmonton, I’m opening a joyful time capsule! I reconnect with the familiar faces I grew up with, all interwoven into a vibrant city that has quietly transformed in delightful ways. While the skyline has changed, the cherished memories remain steadfast. Each visit brings a wonderful blend of nostalgic comfort and refreshing inspiration. I remember the first time I ran a marathon in Edmonton, the nerves, the excitement, and the sense of accomplishment. It was a moment that changed my perspective on mental health and advocacy.

R.i.p mac

This year, being a delegate for Miss Universe Canada means so much more to me than just a title; it embodies years of quiet advocacy fueled by my passion for essential causes. I’m deeply committed to global health, human rights, and mental wellness—topics that deserve our attention daily, not just during designated awareness weeks.

Let me be honest: I’m not a seasoned marathon runner! Approaching that 5K was more about determination than grace. I took time, worked through the challenges, and celebrated each step. Sometimes, showing up and doing your best is the greatest triumph.

@Yourmoderndaymusexo

This experience was more than a spontaneous choice; it was a heartfelt call to action. From June 9th to 16th, I dove deeply into workshops and discussions on men’s mental health.

This journey has taught me that healing and advocacy are unique and often nonlinear paths. They come with challenges, moments of vulnerability, and bravery. But I am wholeheartedly dedicated to continuing this journey. Showing up for myself, my comunity and everyone who has ever felt alone in their struggles.

Showing Up, No Matter What

@yourmoderndaymusexo

As a natural runner (and admittedly, a bit of a sports nutrition enthusiast), I knew I had the endurance, but I still faced moments of hesitation. Yet, one thing mattered more than anything: I showed up. Whether walking or running, whether feeling strong or faint, the most important thing was taking part and standing up for those battling mental health struggles. My actions can inspire others to do the same. Showing up, no matter what, is a powerful act of solidarity and empowerment.

Heartfelt Shout-Outs

A huge thank you to Raj and Lakewood Chevrolet for infusing this event with such joyful energy, along with all their incredible sponsors. Growing up in the city of champions, attending my first event at the beautiful Millwoods Recreation Center was truly special. The pristine facility and friendly staff created a warm atmosphere. Even when I felt tired, every interaction made me feel valued, included, and inspired! What a fantastic experience to be a part of such an uplifting community!

Silence the Stigma: Uniting for Change

@breaksilenceab

I’m genuinely excited to support Silence The Stigma, a wonderful nonprofit dedicated to breaking barriers and raising awareness around mental health. Their mission embraces inclusivity and understanding, guiding us toward a future where mental health discussions are open, and support is available to everyone.

Silence The Stigma, through its Breaking the Silence campaign, is more than just a one-day event—it’s a movement rooted in compassion, inclusion, and community action. Their initiatives focus on dismantling mental health stigma by creating safe spaces for dialogue, education, and support. Take a closer look at what they offer on their website at

By participating in and advocating for these vital causes, we all contribute to creating a more compassionate and supportive future for those in need. We must continue to support these initiatives, not just during designated awareness weeks but throughout the year.

    The mental health awareness event sounds great. It's crucial we break the silence. I've seen how running can change perspectives, like it did for me during my first marathon. Let's keep the conversations going.
