My Ex Invited Me to Her Wedding
But I Got the Last Laugh

My ex-fiancée invited me to her wedding, hoping to humiliate me by flaunting her wealthy new partner, so I brought a special guest as my plus one. By the end of the night, she was left in tears as her marriage fell apart. Despite her yelling, I kept my calm and reminded her that every man has different priorities. Alex, her new partner, might not care about his career as much as I do, given his affluent family background. But I value my career. I also told her that if she wanted someone like Alex, she should stay with him. I made it clear that we shouldn't argue further, and that she could move out of our place as soon as possible.
Her eyes widened, and she asked how I could afford the rent on my own. I explained that I had gotten a raise and could cover the entire rent without a roommate. Hearing this, she began shouting, accusing me of showing off. She boasted about how Alex was wealthier, even owning a house his father bought for him. She then sneered, saying women preferred house husbands over men who earned more than them. At that point, I told her to stop, as I was tired of arguing in the middle of the night. I told her she had until the end of the month to move out, and until then, she could sleep on the couch. I could hear her grumbling, but I ignored it and went to sleep.
Luckily, over the next week, Mia started packing and moving her things out. I began looking forward to having the place all to myself. On her last night, I came home to find Mia and Alex sitting on our couch. I looked at her curiously, and she said she wanted to show Alex where she lived before moving out. I couldn't believe she brought him into our place without asking. I decided not to be rude to Alex, thinking it wasn’t his fault, so I greeted him politely. But to my surprise, he looked at me with contempt and ignored my greeting.
I brushed it off and went to freshen up. Later, while I was cooking pasta in the kitchen, Alex came to get some water. He stood watching me for a minute, making me uncomfortable. I asked if he needed something, but he gave me the same disdainful look. I ignored him and continued cooking so I could eat in peace. After I finished, I was about to head downstairs when I overheard Mia and Alex talking. Alex was telling Mia how lucky she was to have upgraded from someone like me. I froze in shock as Mia laughed and agreed with him.
He then asked why she had ever fallen for me, and that’s when Mia said something that shattered me. She admitted she used me because I was gullible enough to pay for dates and lend her money in college. She even revealed that I had been covering more than half the rent, which allowed her to save money. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I had suspected she was using my kindness to pay more rent, but I had no idea she had been using me from the start. They continued mocking me, making fun of our relationship. I was on the verge of tears, but I didn’t want them to see me break down.
So, I quietly went back upstairs and spent the night crying into my pillow. The next morning, Mia and Alex were gone. She had taken her last belongings and officially moved out. I walked around the apartment, dazed but relieved to finally be free of her. I cried tears of joy, realizing how light I felt now that she was gone. I spent the rest of the day cleaning, removing any trace of her. Over the next few weeks, I enjoyed living alone. I had stopped caring about what Mia and Alex had said about me.
Everything was going well until two months later when a mutual friend at work told me that Mia was getting married to Alex. I was shocked at how quickly things were moving. Our friend showed me their engagement photos, and they looked very happy. While I felt a pang of sadness, I knew I never would’ve been happy with Mia anyway. I was genuinely pleased that she found someone to make her happy. That evening, when I got home and checked my mailbox, I found an unexpected wedding invitation. My eyes widened in disbelief—it was from Mia and Alex.
At first, I thought it was a mistake, a courtesy invite, but when I opened it, I saw she had scribbled a note in the corner: 'I want you to attend my wedding so you can see the grand life I’m going to have with Alex.' It hit me that she had only invited me to flaunt her new life and wealthy partner. I took a deep breath, trying to understand why she would send such an invitation after all I had done for her over the years. All the anger and frustration I had buried inside came flooding back, and I knew I had to be petty in return. I RSVPed with a guest. I had a plan forming in my head, and I was determined to make Mia regret inviting me.
I opened up my laptop and started scrolling through Alex’s social media profiles. After some digging, I found what I was looking for. Six months ago, Alex had broken up with his long-time girlfriend, Rachel. They had been together since high school, and he had several posts with her. I sent Rachel a friend request, and when she accepted, I sent her a message. To my surprise, she responded, and we started talking. I was upfront about who I was and explained my plan to invite her as my plus one to Mia and Alex’s wedding. She was intrigued and curious about my reasoning, so I told her everything.
Over the next few weeks, Rachel opened up about how Alex had cheated on her multiple times, his latest affair being with Mia. This was news to me, as I had no idea about this. She revealed how Alex was always chasing after younger women, so she wasn’t surprised when he fell for Mia. They had a nasty breakup, and she blocked him on all platforms despite him asking to stay friends. It was clear she still had feelings for Alex. I also shared my story about Mia using me for years. Rachel was shocked at how Mia had treated me. After hearing it all, Rachel agreed to be my plus one.
I was excited, imagining the looks on Mia and Alex’s faces when they saw us at their wedding. On the wedding day, as expected, Mia’s eyes widened when she saw me walk in with Rachel. She must’ve recognized Rachel as Alex’s ex. We ignored her and found our seats. Mia stormed over, angrily whispering, asking why I brought Rachel. I just smiled. She couldn’t make a scene in front of everyone, so she had to walk back to the aisle, fuming. When Alex made his entrance, looking sharp in his black tux, the ceremony went smoothly.
At the reception, Alex had changed into a different suit. Jessica and I kept a low profile, ignoring Mia’s angry glares and Alex’s clear irritation. She desperately wanted to confront us but couldn’t without causing a scene. I was content just watching the drama unfold. The tension built up, and by the time it was time for toasts, Mia couldn’t hold back anymore. She stormed over, trying to force a smile, but hissed through clenched teeth, 'What are you two doing here? You think you can ruin my special day?' Rachel smiled sweetly and replied, 'Oh, Mia, we’re not here to ruin anything. We’re here to celebrate with you. It’s such a big day, after all.'
Mia was on the verge of losing her temper, but I cut in. 'Let’s keep this civil, Mia. You wouldn’t want Alex to know how obsessed you still are with me, would you?' Her face flushed with anger, but she had to walk away without making a scene. Later in the night, Alex approached Rachel, visibly agitated. I overheard him ask her why she was there. They began arguing in hushed voices. 'Why are you with him? This has nothing to do with you,' he said. 'We’re over because you cheated on me, remember?' Rachel replied bitterly.
As I watched them, I realized my plan was working even better than I had imagined. Alex was clearly bothered by Rachel’s presence, and Mia was barely holding it together. Eventually, I decided to make my move. I grabbed a glass of champagne and walked up to the microphone used for the toasts. 'Sorry to interrupt,' I began, smiling as all eyes turned to me, including Mia and Alex’s shocked faces. 'I just wanted to thank Mia for inviting me to this wonderful event. For those who don’t know me, I’m her ex, and I’m truly happy she’s found someone who can give her the life she’s always dreamed of. And Alex, congratulations on your acquisition—I mean, your marriage.'
The room went silent. Mia looked like she was about to cry, and Alex clenched his fists in anger. But I wasn’t done. 'I’d also like to raise a glass to honesty and transparency in relationships. May you never lack them, like I did.' I stared directly at Mia and Alex as I sipped my drink. Alex was livid, but mutual friends held him back before he could reach me. 'You’ve crossed the line!' he shouted, but I remained calm. 'I didn’t ruin anything, Alex,' I said, looking him dead in the eye. 'I’m just here to see how things go when you can’t buy someone’s respect or love.'
As Alex struggled to break free, Mia started crying, yelling at Alex, 'Why are you paying attention to him? This is our day!' At that moment, Rachel stepped forward and said loudly, 'You know what, Alex? You deserve this. I remember very well how you treated me the same way, thinking money could solve everything. Well, good luck with your new life.
