In a remarkable display of cultural significance and unity, Victor Hugo Sosa, the Mayor of San Pedro Huamelula in Oaxaca State, southern Mexico, recently married a caiman named Alicia Adriana on June 30, 2023.

The marriage ceremony was a reenactment of an ancestral ritual with deep historical roots. It commemorated the reconciliation between the Chontal and Huave Indigenous groups, whose longstanding rivalry was historically resolved through a marriage alliance.

The tradition of a man marrying a female caiman has been practiced for over 230 years in San Pedro Huamelula.

In local legend, the man symbolizes the Chontal king, while the caiman represents a Huave princess girl.

According to Jaime Zarate, a chronicler of San Pedro Huamelula, the union symbolizes a connection with "the emblem of Mother Earth," where both sides seek blessings from the all-powerful for rain, seed germination, and the overall well-being of the Chontal community.

The marriage is believed to bring luck and prosperity to the town.

Mayor Sosa expressed his love for Adriana during the ceremony: "I accept responsibility because we love each other. That is what is important. You can't have a marriage without love. I yield to marriage with the princess girl," Sosa said during the ritual, as quoted by the news agency AFP.

The celebrations included multiple symbolic gestures. Adriana initially wore a green skirt, tunic, and headdress, representing her cultural significance. She later underwent an outfit change, donning a white dress and veil.

For safety measures, precautions were taken, and Adriana's mouth was bound, acknowledging her status as a reptile with sharp teeth. The caiman was paraded around the community, where locals danced with and held her before the wedding ceremony took place at the town hall.

The festive atmosphere continued after the wedding as her new husband carried Adriana through the streets. Traditional music filled the air, and the caiman received a kiss on the head, further symbolizing their union.

Mayor Sosa expressed joy at the event: "We are happy because we celebrate the union of two cultures. People are content."

This unique and culturally significant ceremony highlights the rich traditions and harmonious coexistence of different cultures within San Pedro Huamelula.
