The movie in question has been receiving a lot of hate for being toxic, but we must remember that it is just a movie - a work of fiction. However, it does offer a very realistic portrayal of the sexual frustration that professional women often have to deal with. For thousands of years, men have been viewed as dominant protectors due to social conditioning. Even though we consider ourselves to be progressive and independent, this conditioning still affects us and the world we live in today.

As women become more successful and independent, it becomes an interesting journey. I recall reading an article about an episode of Oprah where professional women talked about being attracted to men who work in construction, firefighting, and other fields that involve manual labor. A dominatrix I read an article by once revealed that many of her clients are high-level professionals who have a desire to feel dominated.

This movie caters to that fantasy of strong women. The scene in which we meet Laura makes it clear that she is a strong woman fighting for her success but is also bored with her current life. She meets a strong man who could dominate her physically but instead chooses to tease her and overpower her mind.

I once dated a guy who had a criminal record and was involved in violent activities. At first, it seemed reckless and crazy, but on a basic primal level, it felt liberating. I felt comfortable around him in a way that I had never felt with any other man. He took charge of our relationship after some persuasion, and I gave in. It felt freeing not to have to make decisions, to not have to carry the weight of the world on my shoulders, and to not have to take care of him as another responsibility in my day. He took care of me, and it felt good.

It was absurd that an educated feminist who runs her own business would be with a tattooed covered guy with no education who called me names like baby girl. But for a short period, it allowed me to explore a side of myself that I didn't even know existed. I felt like I could be weak and vulnerable and still be protected. The relationship ended when he was arrested again (obviously not so reformed), but it was probably for the best. My teenage daughter, who didn't know the details of the relationship, later expressed sadness that it had ended because I had been so happy.

Women have made significant progress in terms of gender roles, and men also deserve credit for weathering the progress. However, changing thousands of years of socialization is complex. Working women have a lot on their plate. When we raise families, hold down careers, and provide love and support to our husbands, we often lose sight of our own identity, desires, and needs. We haven’t figured out how to share all of our former roles with men, so we are often doing old roles and new roles, which leaves us feeling exhausted.

There are also still primal aspects to the chemistry between men and women, including sexual needs. This movie caters to that primal desire, but it is just a fantasy. It's unrealistic for men who are that gorgeous to own yachts and castles, but it's fun to imagine. For me, it brought back some good memories.

One last thing I'd like to add is that people need to stop criticizing the movie's dialogue. The characters in the movie are speaking a second language, and it's natural for their communication to be simplistic. Even though I'm considered fluent in Spanish, my conversations in Spanish are still more basic than my conversations in English. It's just the nature of learning a new language.
