Recently, a strange love story from China spread across the globe. It is the tale of a guy and an elderly woman who separated and have been happily in love for more than 50 years.
Liu, then a 19-year-old lad, and Xu, then a 29-year-old mother who was widowed, fell in love more than 50 years ago. At that time, falling in love with an older lady was considered improper and immoral.
The pair made the decision to elope and resided in a cave in Jiangjin County in the Southern ChongQing region in order to escape the rumor mill.
They started off with nothing, not even food or electricity. They had to subsist on grass and roots they dug up from the mountain, and Liu constructed them a kerosene lamp to provide light.
Liu started hand carving the stairs for his wife to effortlessly descend the mountain in the second year of their residence there and continued doing so for the next 50 years. In 2001, fifty years after the incident, a party of intrepid travelers were exploring the jungle when they unexpectedly came across the elderly couple and the nearly 6,000-step hand-carved ladder.
"My parents have lived in seclusion for over 50 years and have never spent a day apart because they loved each other so much." One of their seven children, Liu MingSheng, stated, "He hand carved more than 6,000 steps for my mother's convenience over the years, even though she doesn't go down the mountain that often."
Up until last week, the couple had lived in harmony for more than 50 years. After returning from his routine farm chores, Liu, who is now 72 years old, passed out. As her husband died in her arms, Xu sat and prayed alongside him.
Liu was so in love with Xu that even after his death, no one was able to loosen his hold on his wife's hand.
"You said you'd look after me and be there for me until the day I passed away, but now that you've gone before me, how am I going to live without you?" … …
Days were spent by Xu softly repeating this sentence while crying and touching her husband's dark coffin.
Their tale rose to the top of the Chinese Women Weekly's list of the top 10 Chinese love tales in 2006. To ensure that this love tale endures forever, the local government has chosen to conserve the "love ladder" and the home where they once resided as a museum.
