After witnessing the highs during the last few months, we are getting for the next phase of advances with medical tech, the development of new vaccines, and even governments pushing startups in health care as the threat of pandemics disappear from the globe. In these post-crisis days do we keep an eye on our health is it?

A lot of people ignore their mental health and have an inclination towards terms such as mental illness and abnormality, retardation or overthinking, which could be an innate belief of our families and communities. In the end, the majority of people choose to play safe and stylish to hide the deterioration of their mental state by refusing to talk to family members and refusing to see an acupuncturist for treatment. In the end, significant problems can arise because of serious mental health issues which could trigger suicidal thoughts.

In times of problems, there's been a constant response from corporates to go the extra step to learn about your mental health condition. However, how can we trust the position our company takes on our behalf for mental health? Let me explain!

A friend of mine who worked for a large multinational corporation was informed a few weeks earlier about the new norm that was extended to the close of the next financial year. This was a significant factor regarding his mental wellbeing as there was a distinct divergence in the time-to-work as well as family priorities. There was also evident support systems from colleagues and managers after working at home. After a decline in terms of commitment to work, he decided to acknowledge having mental health issues and seek advice from his supervisors and highlight the problems. The leadership was able to boost the morale of his colleagues by promising a healthier working balance and prioritizing mental health initially. To his shock after a few days, the employee was dismissed from the company for budgeting concerns at Covid-19. It was also understood by HR that health insurance was to be renewed to three months following the departure. This was a huge surprise to someone who was dependent on the project and had targets that were set up until the end of the year. However, he was at a low point because of mental health problems. The most traumatic of mental health issues was realized and the company's assets were confiscated in a flash. It is now clear that there is no permanent or eternal thing including the laptop backpack that you use for your personal needs. This is a hard, but basic truth that makes us more resilient to such setbacks.

We appreciate his reaching out to the right group of people to help him regain his goals both in his professional and personal life. He is in the process of launching his own business in the next couple of days.

When retracing all the pieces, it was evident that the company did not go the extra step to support the mental wellbeing, but was instead focusing on the people affected by it in order to avoid a negative image for the company due to any drastic actions taken. This is a grave moral-ethical issue since neither the management nor the top leadership considered addressing the employees' mental health, preferring instead to excuse them from responsibility in the name of Covid-19's influence over the business and a decline in the firm's contribution graph.

Companies shouldn't be reluctant to accept changes in work conditions that could have an indirect impact on their employees, particularly during the aftermath of an outbreak. They shouldn't promote that they are supportive of mental health. Instead, they must train their managers and supervisors on how to manage people suffering from mental illness. If the objective is to sustain the steady flow of income from clients and neglect the mental health of employees they will fall for their own deceit for the near term. After all, it is not always the case that a period will result in huge profits in your pocket however, you need to be able to provide constant motivation and comfort to your employees who are working tirelessly to bring in revenue for companies during the lock-down process in the past few months.
