When, How, I and my dog became epileptics
My dogs and I first seizure
I have had epilepsy since the age of six. Months before that my brother was diagnosed with diabetes at age 11. One day in 2001 I told my lunch lady Sally, I wasn't feeling well. She asked whats wrong? My response was my stomach hurts so she took me to the office and they sat me down. I had zoned out, I could still see but it was blurry. However I couldn't respond or move. I remember the people in the office trying to feed me an andies mint. They thought maybe my blood sugar was low because my brother was a diabetic. They couldn't get me to eat it or respond. They ended up calling 911 and my mom.
My mom told me that I was stiff as a board. She said when the emt got there he picked me up, told my mother I was having a seizure, and ran to the ambulance. I remember seeing a bright white light. At that point they cut my dress off and used the defibrillator on me. I woke up in the Nationwide Children's hospital with a tube down my throat. My parents asked me if I was hungry. I said yeah, I want grandmas chilli. Me being six thought that grandma was close .My dad drove all the way from columbus to findlay just to get me my grandmas chili. I remember they bought me a lot of stuff animals as well with a card that said get well soon.
I was in the hospital for about a week why they tried to figure out what is wrong.Since I was so young they decided to put me on seizure medicine. It was a chewable called Tegratol which I never would take because they tasted gross. I always threw it in between the stove and told my parents I had took it. My dog ended up eating my medicine one day then ended up having a seizure because of that. The day my childhood dog amos had a seizure was also the day cops came to our house.
My dad was home with me,my brother, and my sister. When we seen amos having a seizure we started to freak out. My dad told my brother to call the vet. My brother ended up calling 911. My dad yelled at him for calling 911 instead of the vet. My brother hung up the phone. The 911 operator ended up calling back and talked with my dad. Everyone was screaming and freaking out while my dad tried to explain to the 911 operator what was happening. The operator decided to disbatch 4 police officers to our home. The 911 operator was concerned we were getting beat. That wasn't the case though.
We were getting amos in the van to go to the vet when all this happened. We couldn't get him to the vet because we were told to stay where we are. The police officers came shortly after that. Amos was getting out of his seizure by this point. The police officers interviewed us all seperatly. My mom had just got off of work and came home to 4 police officers in her drive way and everyone getting interviewed. She talked with the police officers and told them that he never hit us before. Which was a true statement. After my mom cleared this all up we took amos to the vet. He was said to be fine and the medicine is what caused his seizure. I later got in trouble for not taking my pills. Amos would later on have more seizures but from unknown causes.
My seizures started to develop from staring off in space to convulsions. It was in my puberty years when it developed to convulsions. I didnt have seizures every day but at least once a month give or take. They normally happened in the mornings. When I was 14 and my sister was 17 we would fight. We would have screaming matches with each other. After the screaming matches I would have a seizure. We later learned what my triggers would be. If I stress, or have lack of sleep, or even see a flashing light it would cause me to have a seizure.
Through my childhood I would get many test done and be on many pills. I would also have many seizures and they couldnt find out what kind of seizures I was having. Sometimes it was a focal seizure and sometimes it was generalized. Apparently it wasn't normal to have both going on. They still havent figured out how to control my seizures yet. It has been about 19 to 20 years living with epilepsy. For my dog amos sadly he past away of old age when I was 18 years old. Rest in peace buddy.
