Where to Start Your New Weight Loss Journey

By Virginia ShefcykPublished 7 years ago 3 min read

Losing weight is something that many people think about. Some people want to lose ten pounds and others want to lose 60, 80, or more. When someone starts thinking about weight loss, it's usually due to either medical issues or personal choice. The first thing that runs through your mind might be where to start? How do I begin such a journey and be successful? These are all very good questions. In this article, you will find tips on where to start making changes, great foods to eat and replacements for your faves, and exercises to start with. Please read below to find out more.

Step 1: Where to start?

The first place to start is to work on what you want your goals to be. How much weight do you want to lose? When do you want to lose it by? Are you going to count calories? If so, how many? Find out by clicking below. What exercises can you do and how long can you work out for? Track your calories with the MyFitnessPal. They have a website and an app. This app is available in Google Play and App store.

This is the calculator I used to calculate mine, its the best one I have found so far.

Step 2: Eat for success.

Now that you've figured out your goals, calories, and if you can, exercises, the next step is to go shopping for healthier food options. But first, you need to cleanse your cabinets and fridge of all the bad foods. Ice cream, cookies, chips, etc. Throw it away or give it to a family or friend. You do not want tempting foods in your house when you start a journey like this. You also want to make room for the new foods you will be eating. Now that you got that done, it's time to restock. Now make a list of vegetables, fruits, lean meats like chicken and beef, eggs, protein-packed foods, etc. My favorite thing to eat when I started my own weight loss journey was hummus and carrot sticks. It is super yummy and super healthy. What you write on that list is what you will be eating. Do not buy anything that is not on that list for yourself. If you want this to work, you have to put in the effort. Plan meals ahead of time if that works for you. Use the ingredients you put on your list.

Step 3: Exercise.

Exercising to lose weight is obvious. Although eating is most important, exercise is going to give you that extra boost your body needs to burn those calories and lose the weight. If you are a beginner, you're going to want to ease into it. When I started my journey, I did a 30-minute walk every single day. That is going to get your heart rate up and your body prepared for future exercises. You want to build up a tolerance so that you avoid any potential injuries. After 30 days, start to incorporate more exercise. I used Fitness Blender on YouTube to find workouts. You can focus on full body, upper body, and lower body workouts. Whatever you want to start with is your choice. I would start with some shorter exercises and then work yourself up to longer ones. If you start with 15 minutes, that's great! Longer? Still great!! Do what feels comfortable and listen to your body. You are going to be sore, but if you have pain, like actual pain other than soreness, take a break. Always make sure you are hydrating with water and fill up on protein. This will keep you fuller longer and also helps with recovery time.

Whatever your goals may be, just remember that everyone starts somewhere. You are trying to better yourself and become a healthier you. Don't be afraid to join a gym, try something new, or even take a break. It is okay to fall on and off the fitness wagon, and it is okay to make mistakes. This is a learning experience no matter how far in your journey you go. There will always be some type of learning involved. I wish you all the best of luck on your fitness journeys!!
