Blissful Burning
I have always been fascinated by the wild beauty of fire. I have fond memories of sitting around a fire with my family or friends roasting hot dogs or marshmallows. The smell never failed to fill me with a sense of calm happiness. I would gaze into the dancing flames and just let my mind be clear. I allowed it to wander wherever it may go.
A few months ago, I was staying over with one of my cousins. She introduced me to a new way of creating that brought a bit of that experience indoors! It was called wood burning and involved using a heated metal tool to burn designs into wood. This medium gave off the same scent as the fires of my childhood. I took a deep breath and was instantly transported back in time.
I immediately got myself a wood burning kit and added it to my creative rotation. I found the tracing paper my cousin used far too confining so I began to draw my own designs. Now I lose myself in an audiobook while breathing in the lovely aroma of burning wood. A few hours later I am stress free with a unique piece of art to show for it! I have found I can create wonderful personalized gifts with this art form, as well!
Calming Colors
I have been bringing my creations to life with color since I was a toddler. As I grew older, I took art classes and learned to use a variety of mediums. I won a few awards in art shows during middle and high school! I still enjoy filling a blank canvas or paper with my imagination. Sometimes it is even more relaxing to simply grab my adult coloring calendar, markers, and my audiobook. This allows me to completely zone out while still feeling productive because the next month needs to be colored before it gets here! Pour paint is another of my favorites. The suspense of lifting the cup to see what unique pattern will appear as I shift the canvas around drives all else from my mind. I also enjoy 3D art that is functional such as designing picture frames and trinket boxes or giving old furniture a new look. Once I found spray paint that looked like sand to make a beach picture frame. I glued on real seashells my husband and I found on our trip to Folly Beach then inserted the picture of us petting a wild pelican! It was just sitting on the pier. We were admiring it when a local said it would let us pet it.
Wonderful Words
Books provide me an escape from the mundane reality of this world. I usually choose something fantasy or medieval. I prefer first person writing as it allows me to fully immerse myself into the character. As I read, I lose myself in the world the author creates imagining every detail. I will find a quiet comfortable spot to curl up with my cat on my lap and a cup of Celestial Tension Tamer Tea beside me. The soft consistent purr of Noel and the hot deliciousness of the tea soothe away all my stress. After experiencing the magic of losing myself inside a story, I found a desire to create my own worlds for others to escape into! So, when the inspiration strikes I will open my laptop, pull up a document, and become one of my own characters. When I write I cease to exist. I am the character. I think, feel, and act as them. It is not my story I am writing about the characters. It is their story I am writing for them! It is so exhilarating when the words flow from within me! There is no planning. I relinquish all control and just type what feels natural.
