The Soul’s Temperature: Dark Night

10 Transformational Growth Tips For Heartache, Trauma & The Dark Night Of The Soul

By Harper ColonPublished 6 years ago 5 min read

The Dark Night of the Soul is a period of spiritual transformation and growth, which comes as a result of deep pain within ourselves. It is common to experience this when our twin flames run away from us to be with a karmic partner or simply ignore our love.

The pain of losing your twin flame goes beyond heartache. It’s like encountering something that your life can no longer be the same without. When we’re born, we’re forced to breathe air, after spending months submerged in a safe water filled womb, unaware of the vast world around us. Once we take our first breaths, water is no longer safe. In fact, we’ll drown in it.

That’s what meeting your twin flame, and then separating from them feels like; trying to go back into the water after being introduced to fresh air.

Now the thing is, in order for the reunion to be worth their time, and yours, you have to actually transform during that dark period. When they return, they’ll be returning for your true essence. The greatest parts of you. They keep coming back because they know you. They know you’re better than whatever pushes them away. Whatever makes you run. Whatever made you reject their love. You’re capable of rising above it.

I’ve learned this from personal experience. My dark night of the soul was triggered by my separation from my twin flame. I had a lot of learning and experiencing that was necessary to make things work in the long run. I viewed him as my beacon of light. The only source of light in my already dark world. My refusal to grow, and move forward to shine my own light was what drove him away, and left me in complete darkness.

Here are a few irrefutable truths I learned during my dark night of the soul, that may help anyone coping with mental illness and trauma.

1. Time is, in fact, an illusion. Of course, time does pass in a physical form, but from an energy standpoint, as our spirits move through time, we experience different parallels, so to place energy in your past, or worry too much about the future, takes your energy away from the only plane in which your spirit can exist: the present. Once the past happens, we transcend to a different plane where past time can no longer exist unless we place energy there. So there’s no obligation to focus on anything from the past. It’s only as real as the energy we let linger in it. I learned that I am not only waking up the next day, but I am transcending to a place where yesterday is completely gone. I cannot go back to it ever again. I don’t have to. All I have to do is answer my call for today and create a better tomorrow to transcend to. I need to be 100% dedicated to TODAY and heal myself for tomorrow.

2. Trust the process and listen to the universe. You will find inspiration and ideas flowing to you as long as you are open to them. When you shed away the distractions, you will find new ways to grow, to enjoy your waking moments, to indulge yourself, and to inspire others.

3. Meditation is medicine. When you feel like you didn’t fully transcend into today and you brought too much of yesterday with you, or wasted too much of your day worrying about tomorrow, you can always meditate. I would tell myself, “I need to get the feck out of here,” and I would meditate. And I meditate in my own way.

4. Self care and self love is IMPERATIVE. Your body is predominantly water. It’s even in your bones. The body has high tides and low tides. Like the moon is to the ocean, your brain is to your body. Water has memory. Any positive affirmation you speak to yourself, any action you take to raise your vibration, is recorded in the water in your body. You are nourishing your own body and raising your tide with your high self praise. If you ever think you’re being too conceited, or too cocky, remember that your tides are high and splashing with your self love energy. If you need medication, take it! If you need natural supplements and herbs for a disorder, illness or poor health, TAKE THEM. Your body is also a vessel for your soul. Make sure you want to be in it.

5. Take heed of all the things your twin flame (or an important person) has taught you from your experience with them. You will find those lessons coming back if you are alone during your dark period.

6. Watch the way you word things and view things. Say “thank you” instead of “I’m sorry” so much. Ask questions when bad things happen. (What am I learning from this? What is happening for me? Why is the universe taking this out of my way?) Your thoughts and your words create a shift within you to help things align.

[If you're reading this with rolled eyes and a closed mind, I was right there with you. I read a load of positive affirmations and none of them healed me or resonated with me. Which brings me to another important lesson.]

8. Nothing will move you, unless you’re ready to move, or already moving. You’re not going to read something and say “thanks, I’m cured.” You need to realize that as strong as your pain is, as prevalent as your darkness is, that it’s a reflection of how powerful your light is. If you can put that much energy and focus into yesterday, into your pain, into your illness. Imagine what can happen if you take control, take that energy back, and only use it for today. You love and forgive yourself and remember that everyday you are evolving. You have learned new information, you are a day older, yesterday no longer exists, and you can pour your energy into whatever will make your transcendence to tomorrow even better.

9. Every spiritual journey involves heartache. You have to understand what a broken spirit feels like, to realize what your true strengths are. The more darkness and pain you feel, only means you’ve got just as much light inside of you.

10. And lastly, you will not learn anything, until you learn to enjoy yourself. You don’t have to be your favorite person in the world right away, that takes time. It does help to think about the ways other people love you, and the way you love them. Instead of saying “why do they love me?” Or “what did I do to deserve them?” Remember that people can only meet you at the depths of which you meet yourself. Don’t reject yourself! It causes you to reject the love of others, and to accept the lack of love from a toxic person. Love is the most powerful source of energy that exists. It moves other people when you love them, and it can move you too when you love yourself.

I hope that anyone that reads this can find a way out of their dark night and into the light.
