A cure for Covid-19?
When I first arrived in Ghana in September a Ghanaian friend told me not to bother taking malaria tablets because they are harmful to the body long-term, as are all western pharmaceuticals. "They all have side effects and make your body weak so that infections can get in" he said. "if you get malaria then just gather some neem tree leaves and boil them in a big pan and drink the tea". It is better at curing malaria than any of your Western drugs and it does not come back. The malaria goes out in your urine and you will feel strong. "Some very good malaria treatments that you can buy at the pharmacy are based on neem" he said. "That is why you will see cars at the roadside under a neem tree with people gathering leaves". It is true, I have seen that and neem trees are all over Ghana. Some reach a huge size. They are the favourite tree for roadside food stalls, sellers to sit under and taxi drivers to park under and wait for customers, as the foliage is plentiful and they on mature neem trees the leaf bearing branches grow at just the right height and angle to provide a lot of shade just above head height.

Why Herbal Medicines are Back on the Table
It's March 20th, and the COVID-19 panic sets in everywhere. It's in the news 24/7, it's all over the Internet and it's all over the worried faces of people in the streets. This is a disease like we have never seen before, it's an absolute catastrophe, the world is coming to an end according to cable news. Facebook is hysterical, Twitter is dramatic, Wall Street is absolutely terrified, and Reddit is already calling the whole thing a conspiracy. One thing is certain, nobody knows what the hell is going on. My mom calls me once again, this time she tells me I've got to buy this new plant-based supplement that is going to strengthen my immune system and has anti-inflammatory virtues, and I've got to go outside as much as possible to absorb an optimal amount of vitamin D, which is supposed to help me fight the virus, should I catch it. "And don't forget to put a mask on", she adds before telling me she loves me, and hanging up.

Living in Fear
PLEASE bare with me and read on. I honestly do not even know where to begin so I am just going to tell you my story. Back in 2018, my husband and I were living in our new home for about a year. We were happy, working, had our then 8 year old daughter and our then 2 year old son. I was in the process of joining the USAF and trying to make a career for myself. My husband and I had some doubts on whether or not I would get in due to some previous medical issues, but the military could get me waivers. While waiting to hear anything from them (the recruiter) my husband and I had talked about more kids. "If I can not get in how would you feel about another baby?" I can remember the slight fear and anxiety in my voice when I brought it up. I was nervous and scared on how he would feel about this. Without skipping a beat though, he replied with "yea, I don't see why not." I can still picture it, I was walking down the road, with my son in his stroller, on my cell with my husband. It was warm and sunny and the sun was shining so bright in a cloudless blue sky. It was an amazing feeling. I hung up with him a few minutes later and begin to walk home. That's when I got the call that we would not be able to go through with the military, which was shitty and sucked, but I was ok with it in a sense. I gave my husband the news and even though it was kind of upsetting not going in, we had a family we were planning now.
