October Oracle Card Reading
two cards for each sign in the Zodiac

If I have any regular readers who are familiar with my work, then this will be a change of genre and medium for them. I decided to bring another one of my passion projects, a divination practice, to the same playground as my fiction writing. Both have roots in the same garden bed because my divination practice is also largely about the patterns and meaning I can intuit from cards, songs, and dice, to paint word pictures and provide clients with something to reflect on.
No matter what your spiritual beliefs are, I am of the opinion that oracle cards and other divination tools can serve secular or supplemental purposes for self-reflection that can deepen your relationship with yourself and your own beliefs.
Today, on the first of October, I prepared a collective reading for each sign in the Zodiac. These messages may resonate with your sun sign (the one most people are familiar with), as well as your moon or rising signs. For example, my sun sign is Taurus, my moon sign is Leo, and my rising sign is Libra. There are many more placements in an astrological chart, and if you know your Birthday, Time, and Location you can find this out for yourself as well. I personally use Astro-Seek for my birth chart, but there are many options online.
So read on, and consider the messages for each sign, and what facets of your life they are applicable to. I am using the Poesis oracle deck by Andrea Wan, and the Terra oracle deck by Lucas Keown and Linsdey Cummins, photos will be featured below. If you enjoy this kind of article from me, please leave a comment and I’ll consider doing them more often.

Wound and the Wasp — Aries
Theme: Affliction
Keywords: pain, agitation, hurt, negativity, damaged, stress, problems, anxiety, impairment
Something in your life has been reopening old wounds, and perhaps more than once. This is causing you stress, making you agitated as a result, and impairing your ability to go about your day at your best. How can you tend to these wounds? What about your environment or your own habits is allowing this to continue? Consider what you have control over and put that into action; set boundaries with yourself or others, and take time to process the feelings these old wounds bring up.
Painful feelings can cause us to breathe shallowly, so pause and allow yourself some intentional slow and deep breathing, fill your chest and belly as far as they’ll go and follow through with some controlled exhalations. Engaging in meaningful movement can be a helpful practice that allows the negative emotions to flow through you. This can be as simple as taking a walk or dancing alone to some music in your room, or just shaking out your limbs one by one until you feel a sense of satisfaction.

Create and the Fennec Fox — Taurus
Theme: Cunning
Keywords: clever, calculated, sensing, shadows, deception, listening, hiding, oversight, secrecy
You may be overlooking certain areas of your life that need attention. Perhaps you already know what these things are but you have doubted your instincts and continued as normal. Your network is both a source of strength and a potential area of vulnerability, it is important to tune in to what is going on around you and listen for those weak spots.
Have you been neglecting your creativity lately? Lean into the things that bring colour to your life and spend some time on that. You may find that your perspective on the more serious facets of your life is enhanced when you allow yourself to connect playfully with creative hobbies or activities and take a break from the structure, perfectionism and rush of the working world.

Change and the Siamese — Gemini
Theme: Mystery
Keywords: magic, possibilities, the intangible, what is hidden, the unconscious, shadows, fantasy
Change can often be a source of doubt and anxiety, but without change, there is no growth. You may not be seeing what is ahead of you, but you can trust your senses and sense to guide you in the right direction. What keeps you grounded? What keeps your head out of the clouds? You’ll want to steer away from fantasy, from the inclination to get caught up trying to solve mysteries along the way and focus on the magic that you’ll experience by keeping a clear vision of what’s ahead. Make sure you are surrounded by good influences and acknowledge whatever tendencies you have that could stunt your growth. If the biggest mystery in your life is your own subconscious, it may be an excellent time to start doing some shadow work.

Home and the Woodpecker — Cancer
Theme: Initiative
Keywords: motivation, procrastination, starting, moving forward, drive, enthusiasm
An opportunity that will affect your home for the better is close at hand, but it is not going to fall into your lap. There is a time and place for going with the flow, and this is decidedly not it. Your actions are required to get what is within your reach, so this is your sign to move and take it. If there is something you’ve been procrastinating on turn your energy to it. All you need to do is start.
Home may not merely be a physical space but an emotional one as well, where you feel at peace and secure to explore yourself. Similarly, you can find “home” in another person, like a relationship. The action you take here will have a positive ripple effect on the lives of others around you so take heart that your effort has the power to influence change and will not go unrewarded.

Union and the Emperor — Leo
Theme: Loyalty
Keywords: dive in, committing, strong values, honesty, others, engagement, decisions, responsibilities
We are all pieces of our experiences, asking to be made whole and we often look to the wrong keys to unlock the best in us. You may be swimming in the shallow waters of the self, trying to go beyond when you need to go within. Reorient yourself to your foundational values, commitments and responsibilities that create the best structure for the life you want to live. This will allow you to dive deep and work out much of what may be holding you back.
Loyalty is often associated with relationships, and these cards ask you to be loyal to yourself. Pay attention to any of your tendencies to self-betray, don’t doubt your instincts about people or situations, and don’t sacrifice your comfort for the sake of anyone else who isn’t also considering yours. Our relationship with ourselves is one of the most important because it allows us to connect authentically with others, intimately and within our community.

Patience and the Manatee — Virgo
Theme: Compassion
Keywords: being present, understanding, empathy, emotion, love, feeling, consideration, kindness
You may be working too hard and too fast right now, and this pace is becoming unsustainable. There are important things you’re missing, and perhaps that’s by design. If you don’t press on the brakes, life will break things down for you, and when you cannot meet the high standards you set for yourself you will fall into a cycle of shame and punishment. Are you pushing yourself harder to distract yourself from unpleasant emotions?
Do away with shame and any ideas that you shouldn’t be feeling certain emotions to begin with: they exist, you’re only human, sit with them and allow them to pass. The longer you try to avoid them, the longer it will take to process and release them. You deserve the time and space to work through things, and fear not, it won’t take nearly as long as you think. When you can show up with patience and compassion for yourself, it inadvertently carries over and enhances your relationships with loved ones too.

Silence and the Otter — Libra
Theme: Revelry
Keywords: having fun, excitement, activity, celebration, chilling out, play, time with others, indulging
When it comes to downtime, are you more inclined to party, see a show, or turn on a streaming service? This time you’re being asked to turn down the noise and spend some quality time in silence, especially if your daily life is already full of noise. By spending time in silence, or at least quiet, you will be giving yourself a much-needed change of perspective. How much louder will life seem once you return from intentional quiet time, and will that prompt you to make some adjustments?
Activities to consider include; a walk in nature, reading a book, a hot bath, baking, spending quality time with a friend or co-regulating with a partner, doing some art, journaling, anything that cuts the constant stream of information you’re receiving and allows your mind to rest and reflect. If you give yourself this intentional time, you might find yourself making more balanced choices about how to spend your downtime going forward, and it may be for the best.

Journey and the Scorpion — Scorpio
Theme: Passion
Keywords: drive, ambition, interest, efforts, intensity, dedication, investment, gusto, desire
It is time to assess your life for the journey ahead. Your passion is powerful and will carry you far, so reign in your energy and stop stretching yourself too thin. You need to take action on what inspires you and be precise and exacting in how you go after it. This is not an impulsive choice, but the opportunity to prioritize what is important to you and commit to it. The terrain isn’t guaranteed to be easy, but that passion will allow you to go the distance.
If you have no idea what your passion is, then now is your opportunity to discover it. What never fails to interest you? What challenges and inspires you? What do you like to read, talk and think about? Dig deep and don’t sell yourself short, you are more capable than you give yourself credit for. When you find your passion it can become your compass, your fuel, and the vessel on which you carry yourself.

Fear and the Seahorse — Sagittarius
Theme: Duty
Keywords: pride, concentration, obligation, taking something on, caring, responsibility, service
In what ways is fear affecting your ability to focus on your current circumstances? Are you consumed by looking for exit signs, ready to bolt at a moment’s notice? When you are living in the past you cannot effectively exist in the present, and your obligations and responsibilities will suffer as a result. Let go of any shame you may be holding onto, at this time you are being encouraged to accept the place you have weighed anchor, and see through whatever commitments have been made.
Allow yourself to be proud of the distances you’ve travelled to get where you are, even if you have climbed high and fallen far. Give yourself the time and space to pick up the pieces without rushing. Keep going despite fear, embrace your courage, give yourself the time you need and watch your success rate climb higher and higher. Consider also the importance of responsibility and obligation to yourself, and honour them as you would anything else. When you do well for yourself you expand your ability to do well for those around you.

Freedom and the Garden Snail — Capricorn
Theme: Isolation
Keywords: retreat, going within, internalizing, protecting, avoidance, refraining
When you go inward, are you also coming out with a better understanding of yourself that allows you to take on new challenges? Has your comfort zone become restrictive? The sturdy shell you have created to protect yourself has been invaluable, but it may be holding you back. Are you able to take in the full breadth of your surroundings from inside your shell?
You are not being asked to do away with your protective measures, but you are being encouraged to trust your ability to explore beyond them. Turn outward to peers and loved ones, they are there to support and protect you through whatever challenges you may face. Freedom is achieved just as much by our internal work as it is by our external work, lean into the latter and find the most sustainable balance.

Unknown and the Shrew — Aquarius
Theme: Excess
Keywords: build-up, neglect, out of hand, splurging, debt, attachment, what isn’t necessary, overload
What have you built up lately that has gotten out of hand? Are you overwhelmed with something material or immaterial? Perhaps it’s both. You are encouraged to do away with excess; clean out your closet, pair down, simplify your routine, or journal about your emotional baggage. Be honest with yourself, it may be difficult but it is necessary to make room so that you can grow.
You have exactly what you need but you may be too overwhelmed to really see it. It’s time to put down all this extra weight you’ve been lugging around and take time to assess yourself, your feelings, and your personal belongings. You may feel rejuvenated and breathe a little easier once you work through all the clutter. Give yourself the chance to rediscover things that make your life easier, and be surprised at what you didn’t even realize you’d lost to the chaos.

Seek and the Mule — Pisces
Theme: Endings
Keywords: conclusions, wrapping up, shutting down, what is gone, completion, turning the page
Something is coming to an end, and you are being asked to make the best of it. A chapter ends and a new one begins, are you clinging to those final words? You might feel the urge to rush through the next threshold or to fight the closing door, but neither is ideal right now. Whether this end is a tragedy or a triumph you are being encouraged to sit with whatever feelings have come up and give yourself the opportunity to process them in full.
You’ve climbed your way up to the top of a mountain and now you need to let yourself rest and assess. You must take advantage of your current perspectives, reflect on the journey so far, and ask yourself what might need to change to make the next leg of your adventure more fruitful. Take in the view from where you stand now before you go seeking better horizons. Accept the lesson, find gratitude and know your direction before taking your next steps.
