Usually, the ketogenic diet is reserved for people with epilepsy, autism, or Alzheimer's disease. But there are also benefits for weight loss, diabetes prevention, and cognitive health. The ketogenic diet has been gaining momentum in recent years due to its numerous benefits.

I wanted to share my personal experience with the ketogenic diet after following it for over a year.

I was skeptical of the ketogenic diet at first because of how restrictive it seemed from all the stories I had heard about it. Now that I've been following it for a year, I can say that this is one of the best decisions I've ever made. From weight loss to energy levels and mental clarity, this is a journey of one woman's experience with the ketogenic diet.

My Journey to the Ketogenic Diet
I would say that I am a skeptic of most things, especially when it comes to dieting. In the past year, I’ve been on what seems like every diet under the sun.

A ketogenic diet has been introduced to me multiple times before, but it never seemed feasible for me because of how restrictive it sounded.

However, in November 2017 I decided to give it a try after reading about all the benefits and success stories. And boy was I in for an interesting ride...

The Benefits of the Ketogenic Diet

It seems like there's a new article on the internet every day lauding the ketogenic diet's benefits. The ketogenic diet has been shown to help with weight loss, diabetes prevention, and cognitive health, among other things.

What is the ketogenic diet? The ketogenic diet typically involves getting about 75 percent of your daily calories from fat, 20 percent from protein, and 5 percent from carbohydrates. This means no sugar or starch (e.g., breads, pasta).

When you follow this type of high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet, your body enters a state called ketosis where it burns fat instead of glucose for fuel. This means that all those crispy french fries you used to love are now off-limits!

Ketosis can be achieved by following a strict diet with lots of healthy fats and proteins until your body develops the metabolic machinery to produce its own glucose internally.

It can take up to 72 hours before your body is fully into ketosis though some people may notice effects within 24 hours after starting their eating plan.

Getting Started with the Ketogenic Diet
I knew I had to try the ketogenic diet when a friend told me they saw a video of Dr. Michael Greger, who was talking about how it helps with weight loss.

In order to start my ketogenic journey, I first had to calculate my body mass index (BMI). If you don't know your BMI, no worries! There is a calculator on the top right of this site that will do the work for you.

Once I found out my BMI, I tracked my macronutrients and calorie intake for a few days to see where I was at.
I then started following a ketogenic diet plan, which meant that no more than 5% of my total calories came from carbohydrates per day.

This really challenged me at first because I didn't know what I could eat or if there were any substitutes available. But as time went on and more recipes got added, it got easier and easier to stick with this plan!

What Can You Eat on the Ketogenic Diet?
Most people who start a ketogenic diet find it difficult to figure out what they can and cannot eat.

It's important to know that there are no "bad foods" on this diet, but some choices may be more ideal than others. Healthy fats, for example, should make up the bulk of your diet. You can include avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, macadamia nuts, butter, eggs (including the yolks), and full-fat dairy.

The ketogenic diet also emphasizes eating plenty of vegetables. These should make up the majority of your plate. Low-carbohydrate vegetables like leafy greens, broccoli, green beans, asparagus, cauliflower (cooked or raw), cabbage (raw or cooked), green peas (frozen or canned without added sugar) sprouts are all great options.

And finally the ketogenic diet provides many fruits as well as berries like strawberries and raspberries that do not have added sugars in them! It is important to note that you need to limit how much fruit you eat because it has natural sugars which will slow down your weight loss process if consumed too often.

Keto Recipes
I'm going to share three keto recipes with you. The first is for a breakfast muffin that's sweet, healthy, and easy to make! It's made with almond flour, eggs, vanilla extract, nutmeg, baking powder, salt, and Stevia for sweetness.

The second recipe is for a cauliflower pizza crust. It's gluten-free and low-carb. You can top it with whatever you want to have a low-calorie meal in just minutes!

Finally I'll share my favorite keto cake recipe when I need something sweet. This cake is the perfect combination of chocolatey goodness and fluffy goodness.
It's delicious when it's iced too!
