Life Is Only Your Way of Thinking

In a certain state lived a very wealthy man. He possessed every comfort of life. He had only one son, who lived a luxurious yet lonely life.

One day, the man thought that he should somehow make his son realize how privileged his life was. He wanted his son to understand that many poor people lived in society and survived under harsh conditions, so that the boy could learn the value of the blessings and wealth he had been given.

With this intention, he decided to take his son to a village, where they would spend an entire day in the home of a poor farmer. The man and his son reached a small village in their state and spent the whole day with a farmer.

The father showed his son the entire village—the lifestyle of the villagers, their food, clothing, and simple way of living. In this way, he thoroughly introduced his son to rural life.

For the wealthy man’s son, everything was new and unusual. He observed everything with great interest.

On their return from the village, the father asked his son,

“Son, how was this picnic?”

“Very good,” the son replied.

“Did you see how poor people live their lives?” the father asked.

“Yes,” the son answered politely.

“And what did you learn from it?” the father asked.

After thinking for a while, the son replied,

“I noticed that we have one dog at home, while they have four dogs in the village. We have a swimming pool within the boundaries of our house, whereas they have rivers and streams with no limits at all.

We have expensive bulbs and tube lights that illuminate our garden at night, while the poor villagers have sparkling stars above their heads that shine automatically as soon as darkness falls.

Our lawn ends at the boundary wall of our house, while their lawn is the land stretched as far as the eye can see.”

Hearing this answer, the father was left speechless.

The son continued,

“Thank you, Father, for showing me and making me realize how poor we actually are.”
