He did so by marrying off couples secretly in the church. Marriages were forbidden at that time due to the ongoing war to be precise. Saint Valentine had helped many Christian couples get married as per the records. This had angered the emperor and as a result he had given out orders to get St. Valentine arrested. He was tortured and finally martyred on the 14th of February.
