Spirituality is so much more than what you see on Instagram

Are you spiritual? Maybe the way spirituality is portrayed you think that it’s not for you because it’s too ‘hippie dippie” or ‘woo woo’. That is something that makes me deeply and truly sad because spirituality is for EVERYONE. It does not mean that you need to hug trees and take incense baths wearing crystals and flower crowns everyday from now on. It doesn’t even require a certain religion or belief. Spirituality is about making your life better for you, whatever that life may be. Humans are SPIRITUAL beings. We have a soul or a spirit! When we say things like ‘she’s a free spirit’ we cannot deny that there is a certain energy to every human. And, we have to take care of this spirit body JUST as much as we take care of the physical body. In fact, when the spirit body is taken care of, physical health and everything else falls into place much easier.
Now you’re thinking, ‘Oh man..one more thing I have to add to the list, when I have all this other stuff I have to do already!’ But here’s my secret to you: My spirituality harmonizes with the path I am on. Spirituality can be really hard, complicatedly complex and beautiful. It can also be effortless. Even when we are just sitting watching Netflix. You spirituality is YOURS. It’s actually better this way! If we all wanted to become expert meditation teachers we would just have a world of expert meditation teachers, just like if we all wanted to be firefighters to protect everyone, then we wouldn’t really have anyone to protect because we would all be firefighters! If we all wanted to be scientists, then who would teach our children in schools? Who would build our houses? Unless we all decide to learn to do every one these things, we need to think of the world as a large brain. The synapses and the neurons do different things but both are JUST as important. Therefore, when we are thinking of the matter of our spirits, we shouldn’t be thinking of the stuff all these Instagram models are doing to be spiritual in their lives, we should be for fitting it to our own lives. Here are some tips I wish someone would’ve shared with me at the beginning of my spiritual path.
Mindfulness, mindfulness, mindfulness. THIS DOES NOT MEAN MEDITATION! Let me make that extremely clear! While meditation is obviously super beneficial, it is not the only resource of mindfulness. When I’m being mindful in my life, I’m shifting my consciousness to the present. That’s it. There are no rules or correct ways on how to go about this, there’s no where, when or why. To be mindful is to just BE, while being aware of it. So, start with what you’re already doing. Are you petting your dog or drinking your coffee right now while reading this? Stop reading for literally 3 seconds and say to yourself, “I am ____ right now.” Great job! you were just mindful for 3 whole seconds! Bringing mental awareness to your physical self helps immensely with spirituality and over all well being. My favorite way to be mindful is a little MICRO meditation. Whenever i get out of the car or leave my house or maybe having good quality time with fellow humans, whenever I think about it I stop for like 5 seconds and really just take in what I’m doing. A great way to do this is noticing your 5 senses. So, I will stop what I’m doing and notice something I hear, smell, hear, etc. and kinda just marinate in it. BE WHERE YOU ARE. This is where I like to practice gratitude and just enjoy the moment. No matter what you like to do, just make sure you know you like it an you are aware of you enjoyment! Take it in and savor it. The most important time is NOW!
Raise those vibrations! You may or may not have heard us hippies going on about ‘those good vibes man!’ Let me break that down for you in my own words. You attract what you put out. Think of the golden rule here; treat other how you want to be treated. Treat life how you want life to treat you. The things we do and say put out vibrations. High vibrations are full of vitality and joy while low vibrations are dull and unconscious. So, if you’re gossiping, you’re probably going to attract friends who gossip. To attract better things in life we want to raise our vibrations so we can attract things like abundance and healthy love. Some fun ways I use to raise my vibrations are 1. Picking up litter to thank Mother Earth 2. Giving for now reason 3. Dancing to my favorite song 4. Micro meditation and mindfulness. The things that bring harm none and lots of joy will bring the high vibrations. That is where life gets good.
Change is not over night. When you have a problem that a simple aspirin will not fix, it most likely will take time to heal. As a society, we like quick fixes. I know I do! If there was a pill to make me skinny no matter what i ate you know I would be taking that! But that’s not reality. Most things actually do take time when they are worth it. Spirituality is not a quick fix. It is not a crash diet. It is a change of lifestyle! Our society has been built on assembly line thinking and standardized testing. Of course your body is going to take a while to adjust to healing in a different way. Do not decide that sound bowls do not work for you when you have only tried it once. Give yourself time to adjust and be kind to yourself while you are learning new things. You are only human!
