World Cancer Day: Detect Mouth Cancer Early by following these simple tips
The Beginning
In the United Kingdom, World Cancer Day is observed on November 20 each year and celebrated by millions of people. There are many worthy causes that deserve to be recognized and that raise the awareness about cancer and help everyone to detect it early. The second National Cancer Prevention Month (May 10th), is also observed in the UK. This month, I have decided to educate you all to know more about this cause and how it can be avoided through better health habits and following proper medical care.
Mouth Cancer
Mouth Cancer has become one of the most common types of cancers. It is estimated to affect around 5% adults. According to statistics, 75% of people with mouth cancer die within two years after diagnosis. Mantle cells are destroyed, while the cancerous cells remain unchanged. A tumor starts off as a small lesion, and after a period of time, the lesions may spread to other organs or parts of the body. Symptoms include difficulty swallowing, inability to speak clearly, feeling numb and sore, trouble talking or speaking. Some people may feel full and some may even lose their sense of smell. Many patients with mouth cancer have a history of smoking or drinking, but they are rarely diagnosed.
Mouth Cancer Treatment
According to the Centers for Disease Control, there is no cure for mouth cancer. However, surgery and radiation treatment can provide some form of pain relief. Patients should use mouth guards, try not to eat food with an ingredient like salt and pepper when they are sick, avoid drinking alcohol, cigarettes, coffee or hot drinks while they are at your home. Children with mouth cancer and young children shouldn’t drink too much soda and should limit it to half a glass, so that everyone can enjoy it. If someone smokes or smokes a lot, they should quit. Women should keep themselves dry during pregnancy and after delivery and men should try and quit if they smoke but can’t make it. People who stop working while taking medicine for mouth cancer have a decreased risk of recurrence after surgery to save the life or stop them from developing secondary tumor.
Mouth Soreness
Many people get mouth sores, which are painful, hard and sometimes even bleed. They usually start in the lips and spread to other parts of the face or body that are sensitive and should be treated right away. Painkillers are used to control it but they can have side effects or interfere with your diet. So it is important for the patient to stay out of the sun, wear sunglasses and avoid wearing hats, long skirts, tight dresses or high heels. Also, people should drink lots of water. They should never touch certain objects, especially hot metal, because this could trigger painful sores. You can keep yourself hydrated by eating fruits and vegetables. Avoid using chemical-laden products or beverages. Don’t take any herbal medications such as ginseng and garlic supplements.
Mouth Tumors
Most people are unaware of the symptoms of mouth cancer. Most people with mild disease don’t have any problems while other people experience severe pain or even death. Sometimes, you will lose your sense of smell or feel numb and become unable to talk or swallow anything. You may say strange words that you weren’t told to speak, or you might even hear your own voice when you wake up, so don’t think mouth cancer is any normal symptom or cause. Mouth cancer can occur in anyone and it occurs at different ages or stages, and people with earlier forms of the disease have higher chances of developing secondary tumors. As we all know, some people with mouth cancer develop rare blood-related malignancies like leukemia and lymph node metastases. For those people, mouth cancer requires intensive and multidisciplinary healthcare service. To prevent mouth cancer, we need to make sure everyone has healthy diets and avoid consuming excessive amounts of sodium, fats, junk foods.
The doctor can check and treat for mouth cancer for many reasons. First, mouth cancer can be prevented. Even though the disease is curable or possible treatment of mouth cancers, if diagnosed early, it is very likely to be successful and less dangerous. We can learn some things like, don’t give yourself permission to eat raw meat or pick up hot spicy foods or acidic sweets, and to avoid smoking or drinking. Second, treatment. Although these treatments can reduce the pain if the person is diagnosed early and treated effectively, there are other ways of getting rid of the cancerous cells. Surgery can provide further pain relief. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are used to destroy the cancerous cells while others use chemotherapy or anti-cancer drugs, and many cases of mouth cancer can be cured and its metastasis can be controlled or even stopped. When a person gets diagnosed with mouth cancer, the main goal is treatment, not just diagnosis. Good quality health services should be available to every individual and there should also be free mobile cancer clinics, where people can easily access their nearest hospital.
Caution
Mouth cancer is avoidable and can be cured if detected early. Through good diet and proper hygiene, it can be treated and less dangerous than any other type of cancer. But before you are aware about mouth cancer, visit your nearby doctors/healthcare facility and ask questions. Always Keep your your eyes and mouth neat & clean. Do not touch it with bare hands or consume foods containing an acid that irritates your skin. Ask questions like, does my mouth hurt? If it does, then don’t eat the listed food. Check whether there is any medical issue in your family like, asthma, diabetes or other chronic diseases. Look after your teeth and gums regularly. Visit a dentist even if you don’t have any dental problems. Remember, the best way to protect your teeth is to avoid touching it and eating food or drinking products with ingredients like salt, sugar, flour and etc.
