The world of calisthenics

By Calistenia ESPublished 6 years ago 3 min read

Calisthenics is a form of exercise that relies on the person using their bodyweight specifically to train. With time, effort and progressive increases in strength the learner evolves their skill set and learns movements that to others can seem to be of a super human level. The world of calistenia is a way of life and leads the athlete into a world of self discovery. Calisthenics is not just a style of training and movement, it is a way of life.

In the times that we are in at the moment, with the insecurity of closure of gyms, we realise that we have to remain active, healthy and moving - whether we are enclosed within our homes, or free to roam and explore the world in which we live.

Calisthenics can gift you this experience, through hard work - you can achieve great results while losing fat and gaining pure lean muscle. The word calisthenics comes from two greek words - kallos (beauty) and sthenos (strength).

Benefits of Calisthenics:

1. Effect on the mind and body.

The form of exercise that it is - increases your; muscular endurance, your strength, flexibility, your body posture, body control and balance and coordination. Calisthenics works the whole body and so avoids physical asymmetries. The body also acquires better versatility and stability. Calisthenics help the muscles of the body to increase their tone, agility and speed of how the neurons work.

After doing the exercise - you feel a hormone rush, endorphin, serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin release. In this turbulent world it is very important to feel good about yourself.

2. It's free:

The first reason many people fall in love with calisthenics is that your gym is your body - you only have to use your body weight, and you don't have to pay anyone. When you see the results on your body and health - without doing weighted exercises, you fall in love with the art of calisthenics.

Obviously, there are some things you can buy to improve your workout; like pull-up bars, rubber bands, a weighted vest, parallel bars, battle ropes - but the bottom line is that it's not necessary. So, calisthenics is a very economical way to train, without the need for a gym.

3. You can do Calisthenics wherever you want, whenever you want.

With calisthenics you can always work out wherever you want, and whenever you want - at home, on the beach, in the parks or out on the street in the form of a street workout. With gyms, you have to spend a certain amount of time to train, to go there and to come back, and it takes a lot of time out of your day. With calisthenics you can get up in the morning or before you go to sleep - do a calisthenics routine, i.e. exercise at home or in your room, for 15-20 minutes, and go on with your day quietly.

One problem that many people have that use gyms regularly is that when they can't get to the gym to use the weights or machines there - they lose muscle, muscle tone and cardiovascular capacity. With calisthenics you never lose anything - you control how much you do, when you do it, and where you do it.

Gym exercises can also be monotone, and create a body type that is not always ideal.

Calisthenics need very little space, and you can use what you find around the house to help you. For example; a chair, to work the legs or use them to do dips for the chest and triceps; a door frame or a bar outside to do pull ups, stair runs if you can not leave your house (with the theme of quarantines!) - everything becomes your gym - your imagination grows - and everything becomes apart of your exercise routine.

4.Calisthenics is for everyone - without requirements and discrimination

If you are a woman or a man, whatever age you are - you can practice calisthenics. It's your own journey to know your body, to use your body weight, to control it and to achieve what you want - a healthier, stronger and more agile mind and body.
