Chinese Study Reveals Alarming Link Between Sugar Consumption and Chronic Diseases

Are you aware that consuming more than two tablespoons of sugar daily (25 grams) increases the risk of forty-five chronic diseases? Chinese scientists have conducted a comprehensive review of all available studies comparing sugar consumption in diets with the health outcomes of individuals who previously had no acute or chronic illnesses. The scientists discovered several harmful relationships between sugar consumption and chronic diseases.

It turns out that exceeding the daily intake of two tablespoons of sugar can elevate the risk of forty-five chronic conditions, including heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, gout, tooth decay, depression, and pancreatic cancer. Their overall review encompassed 73 studies from 8,600 articles and was published in the British Medical Journal.

The researchers found that sugar increases the risk of developing ten cardiovascular outcomes, seven types of cancer, and eighteen endocrine and metabolic disorders. Additionally, consuming more than 25 grams of sugar daily was associated with ten neuropsychiatric, dental, liver, bone, and allergic effects.

Individuals who consumed sugar-sweetened beverages exhibited greater ectopic fat accumulation and increased body weight. These beverages include carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks, fruit drinks, as well as sports and energy drinks. Drinking more than one serving of these beverages per week was linked to a higher incidence of breast, prostate, and pancreatic cancers. Moreover, every additional 250 ml of sugar-sweetened beverage consumed daily increased the risk of gout by 4%, the risk of ischemic heart disease by 17%, and the overall risk of death by 4%.

Added sugars in the diet also contribute to liver steatosis and the development of fat tissue within muscle tissue. Increased sugar intake is also associated with higher LDL cholesterol levels, childhood obesity, and latent autoimmune diseases in adults. The study also revealed that a 25-gram increase in fructose consumption was associated with a 22% rise in pancreatic cancer.

The authors conclude, "It is recommended to limit sugar-sweetened beverage consumption to less than one serving per week (approximately 200-355 ml/week) to reduce the adverse impact of sugars on health."

"High sugar consumption in the diet, especially sugars containing fructose, is harmfully associated with a large number of health consequences," says Professor Liangren Liu from the West China Hospital at Sichuan University.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is the primary culprit behind the growing epidemic of chronic diseases and all coexisting diseases underlying mortality due to infectious diseases. HFCS is a public health crisis as it is added to various products across the standard diet and is deliberately formulated to addict consumers' brains to these products.

The higher fructose-to-glucose ratio in HFCS aims to create brain addiction. Scientists have discovered that this higher fructose ratio causes "both neural and physiological changes associated with addictive and metabolic diseases."

While the body requires some sugar for cellular function, excessive sugar quickly worsens the composition of cell membrane lipids. Research shows that excess sugars in the body convert into fatty acids, which disrupt the composition of cell membranes by reducing the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). By lowering PUFA concentration in mitochondrial cell membranes, excess sugars burden mitochondria, impairing the performance of these crucial energy centers throughout the body.

The amount of sugar, whether it's from packaged juice, cola, or a sports drink, is not balanced energy. When cellular energy becomes imbalanced, constant fatigue attacks are felt throughout the day. Many individuals reach for sugary drinks to combat this fatigue, but it only perpetuates the cycle of disease and energy loss.

This constant fatigue and exhaustion is the result of an excess of sugar damaging the mitochondria.
