What kind of wood are you using?

Balsa. The lightest and softest wood on the list, balsa is also one of the most resilient woods around. It's generally used for model airplanes and building models because it's easy to cut, but it can be used for other things if you're careful with it. Balsa is a very inexpensive wood, so if you want to try it out, you won't be afraid to make a mistake or two.

Wood veneer. This is one of the more common woods that people work with because you can buy wood veneer in small sheets. Just glue them together with wood glue and clamp them while they dry to get some fairly large pieces of wood veneer quickly. Veneer works well for making decorative items like boxes or picture frames because it's thin and lightweight. Plywood. This is an engineered product made up of many layers of thin sheets of wood glued together to create thicker sheets of durable material that can withstand more abuse than plain old veneer or solid wood. Plywood is great for making furniture because you can use thicker pieces without worrying about splitting apart at the seams when you put things on top of your furniture. Particleboard
