So, as a business owner, especially a small business, it is important to take care of yourself. Many times, you are the only person who controls whether or not your business succeeds. You often wear many hats and do many jobs. Without you, where would your business be?

So, why do you need to take care of yourself as a small business owner? Is it really that important to exercise and watch your diet?

  • You need the money. You probably got into your business to make money. No matter if you wanted a full-time income or just some help to pay the bills, income is income.
  • Others are counting on you. Whether you have employees or not, your family is counting on your income to help. If you have employees, they need your business to succeed so that they can support their families.
  • You can work better after a break. Time away makes you feel refreshed. Sometimes when you are stuck, a break will give you the clarity to make changes and move on.
  • You need to relieve stress somehow. Business owners who are always stressed are not going to do the best job that they are able. You need to find ways to relax so that you can work better.

It is often easier said than done. Here are some things that you should do regularly to ensure that you are taking good care of yourself.

  • Eat well. You need to eat well to have the strength to work hard.
  • Exercise at least several times a week. Besides being healthy, it allows you to blow off some steam.
  • Get enough sleep. This can be hard because we often feel that we have to get up early or stay up to work late so that we can put more time into our business. However, with enough rest, you will perform better at your job.
  • Find time to relax. Life is too short to just work and sleep. You need to enjoy life.
  • Spend time with your family. You work to support them, so find time to enjoy them. You will come back to work refreshed.
  • Go to the doctor regularly. Regular checkups are important to stay healthy. They may even help you catch something early.
  • So, now that you want to take care of yourself, how can you find the time?

    • Hire some employees if you have enough business and are able to. Though you may not want to hand over any of your responsibilities, it can be freeing to hire some help.
    • Hire a virtual assistant (like me). Often, we are better than employees because we work only as needed. Instead of having to pay an employee, you can just use a virtual assistant for whatever time you need.
    • Delegate things that you hate to do so that you can spend more time doing the things that you enjoy. When thinking about hiring employees or even a virtual assistant, you may not know what you tasks to give them. You should start by delegating tasks that you don't enjoy doing, so you can focus on the tasks that you do want to do.

As a business owner, you need to take care of yourself. You need time away from your work so that you can enjoy life. So, make sure that you find little ways to take care of yourself. You don’t even need to worry about taking a day or a week. Sometimes, ten minutes are enough to give you a break to come back refreshed and energized. Stress relief is very important, especially because too much stress is very harmful to your body.
