Why Travel Insurance?

A simple and affordable way to protect against the financial risks of traveling.

What Is Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance is a type of insurance that protects you from certain financial risks and unexpected losses that you may experience while traveling. Maybe your suitcase is lost at the airport or maybe there’s a storm that prevents you from boarding your flight – travel insurance is there to save the day! It’s a simple and low-cost way to enjoy peace of mind when planning your next vacation. The last thing you want is for an unforeseen mishap to ruin your travel plans. After all, vacations are meant to be stress-free and relaxing. Travel insurance helps you enjoy the peaceful vacation that you deserve.

Types Of Travel Insurance

Depending on your travel plans, you will need different types of travel insurance. There are three types of travel insurance to choose from: travel health insurance, flight insurance, and cruise travel insurance.

Travel Health Insurance

Experiencing injury or illness when traveling abroad can be extremely expensive because Medicare does not provide coverage to Americans outside the USA. If you’re traveling abroad for over 30 days, it is a good idea to purchase a medical-only travel insurance plan. Those traveling abroad for shorter periods with specific travel dates can purchase a general travel insurance plan which would cover medical expenses and emergency evacuation on top of additional travel coverage.

Flight Insurance

If your flight is delayed due to bad weather, airlines have no obligation to pay for your hotel room. This is where flight insurance comes in. Travel insurance also covers the non-refundable portion of your trip should you have to cancel for a covered reason. In addition to this coverage, travel insurance also covers medical expenses, medical evacuation costs, baggage, and trip interruption costs.

When purchasing a plan, avoid insurance offered by your airline as these plans are often more expensive and don’t cover you should the airline go bankrupt.

Cruise Travel Insurance

Cruise lines typically require large, non-refundable deposits at the time of booking. Cruise trips also tend to have multiple legs of travel that could increase your travel risks. Cruise travel insurance covers the non-refundable portion of your trip, medical expenses medical evacuation costs, baggage, and trip interruption costs. It’s also important to ensure that your cruise travel plan includes coverage for hurricanes, travel delays of a common carrier, the bankruptcy of a travel supplier, and cancellation for any reason coverage.

The Advice of The U.S. Department of State

What’s the first thing you should do when you experience an emergency overseas? Most American travelers call the local U.S. embassy for help — but those travelers are often disappointed to discover that the embassy staff’s powers are limited. They can help you replace a stolen passport; contact family or friends in the U.S.; find medical care or legal assistance; communicate with local police, and connect you with various resources. But an embassy cannot pay for your medical care, provide emergency transportation (except during rare, major catastrophes), or otherwise take care of any financial losses you suffer while traveling.2

That’s why the State Department advises American travelers to carry travel insurance — specifically, travel insurance that includes emergency medical benefits, emergency medical transportation benefits, and coverage for other unexpected expenses, like trip cancellation and lost or stolen luggage.
