Using Black Friday Sales

To Your Prepping Advantage

By M.L. LewisPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Black Friday is one of the biggest shopping days of the year, generating most of the profit for a majority of retailers that participate in it. When it became widely known in the 1990s, it was about retailers finally reaching profitability or in the black. 30% of all yearly retail sales are made on this day. On average, shoppers will wait 2.5 hours to get deals spending around $1,000. America isn’t the only country that participates in Black Friday. Fifteen other countries like the UK, India, and Norway will be having sales going on. Here is how you can turn your Black Friday shopping into a prepping opportunity.

Home Goods

Home Goods is a popular department on Black Friday. It has a wide selection of ideas. Luggage on wheels makes for a great bugout bag, allowing you to carry more supplies, without straining your back. Kitchen supplies like pots and casserole dishes can be used for a variety of things, like water purification. While a shower curtain liner can help you catch and funnel water into them. Towels make for good blackout curtains. Craft kits can make for quick entertainment in your Rainy Day Cube and bugout bag. Storage containers can help you organize your preps and make them more efficient.

Apparel

Clothing and accessories can do more than just make you look good, they can help save your life. Costume, fake, jewelry can be used to trick a thief away from the real items. Socks can be used as hand warmers. Tie the legs together and inflate a pair of pants to make a life jacket. Shirts can be cut up into rags for cleaning up. A watch can tell you the time when your phone dies. Mirror sunglasses can be used to reflect sunlight to catch a rescuer’s attention or to start a small fire. Belts can make a strong rope alternative.

Food

Some stores have heard the outcry for sales on food items on Black Friday. A wide variety of tea can help calm your nerves, along with other comfort foods like candy and soup. Food gift sets can add unique, shelf-stable food to your emergency pantry. Freeze-dried meals have a shelf life of ten or more years. Condiments like hot sauce and mustard come in holiday-themed packs in an assortment of flavors. Bulk flour, beans, and rice will be served at lower-than-normal prices. Food items sold for Thanksgiving will probably be discounted if there’s anything left.

Cleaning/Hygiene

Nothing brings Christmas joy faster than a clean house, so stock up on all of your cleaning essentials such as trash bags, disinfectant wipes, and cleaning sprays. Broom and dustpan sets will see a considerable mark down on Black Friday. Air freshener spray can make a stuffy storm shelter smell nicer. Parchment paper can be used to draw out plans while keeping pans clean. Dryer sheets can be flammable and make your bags and kits smell nicer. Perfumes and cologne can cover up your lack of bathing during water shortages.

Other

Here are a variety of things you can find throughout a store that will be hugely helpful in a disaster marked down for Black Friday. Bikes and scooters make for a good alternative form of transportation. Just don’t forget the helmet. A bubble gun can attract a rescuer to your location when lost in the woods. Portable grills are good for blackout cooking. A deck box can provide you with emergency storage outside in case something causes you to flee the home. Don’t forget supplies for the baby during and after the disaster as they make splendid gifts for new moms, so stores will often discount them.
