When starting a DIY or home improvement project it can be hard to know where to start and what you need. We at WasteOnline* have created six helpful tips for anyone starting a new project. So even if you are a beginner or an expert these are the steps you should take when starting home improvements or DIY projects.

1. Budget – Before setting out on any DIY work always come up with a rough budget for the work you want to achieve. This will prevent you from overspending or running out of money before you finish. Your budget should include Base Material Cost, finishing material costs (Paint etc.), Delivery of items (Bulky items can cost more to deliver), Labour cost (If necessary) and waste removal cost (Skip hire or collection).

2. Create a clear plan – Before you start your work you should make a clear and complete plan that everyone involved in the project is aware of. This will ensure all the jobs get completed in the most efficient way possible.

3. Have a designated workspace if possible – There is nothing worse than needing a particular tool or material and it has gone missing. By having a designated space for tool and materials it will help prevent things from getting lost or being forgotten.

4. Know your Limits – If you are performing important work on a house, it is sometimes better to hire a specialist for certain aspects like wiring or plumbing. Attempting to do jobs like these without the know-how can end up costing more.

5. Plan for things to go wrong – When doing any project there will always be a few things that don’t go to plan. By having room in the budget and timeframe for any problems should they occur will mean you are fully prepared when they do happen.

6. Get your friends to help – Doing DIY with others makes the whole experience more enjoyable. Whether it be a partner, friend, or college. It can boost the atmosphere and get the job done quicker.

7. Don’t Rush – When starting a project, especially when you’re a beginner it is important to take your time to ensure the final result is high quality. Any job that is rushed is likely to have more problems in the long term which will cost you more time and money. So always go for quality over speed.

8. Just go for it – Once all the planning is done and a rough budget is in place just dive straight in. Otherwise, it could end up being dragged out or forgotten. So don’t be afraid to get stuck in. The sooner you start the sooner it will be finished and then you will be able to enjoy the results of your project and show them off to all your friends and family
